New Mexico mom jailed for overdue 'Twilight' book, DVDs

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A New Mexico woman was arrested and spent a night in jail for not returning the book "Twilight" and two-DVD set "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" back to the library on time.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (http://bit.ly/MY6rJW ) Lori Teel was arrested and handcuffed at her Portales home in front of her five small children earlier this month for the $36 worth of library materials not returned since 2010.

Her attorney says arrest warrants were mailed last year to an address at which Teel hadn't lived since childhood, but Teal was arrested by officers investigating a disturbance.

Her charges were dismissed.

"True Blood" creator says next season will be his last

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Alan Ball, the creative genius behind HBO's Southern gothic vampire drama "True Blood," has decided that next season on the show will be his last.

At the dawn of a new season in which a Vatican-style theocracy takes hold of Sookie's world, Ball discusses his decision with Wrap editor Sharon Waxman, and explains how Rick Santorum inspired this season's storyline.

Q: I'm sad. This will be your last season doing "True Blood"?

A: It's just a question of mental and physical health. Running a TV show is huge. There's a reason people take a year off and stuff like that. I'm at the point where the show is very strong. All the writer-producers know what they're doing.

Everybody is operating at the executive producer level. I need a break to clear my brain. Clear the deck. Live as a human for a few months.

Q: It's not 12 months a year -

A: It's close to 10-11 months a year. By the time I'm finishing post (-production) on episode 12 it's August. And I go to every single spotting, casting session, editing. After five years of that, it's self-preservation. I'm ready to move on and work on some different types of things.

Q: Do you feel the show will be able to carry on your voice once you leave?

A: I believe I'm leaving it in very good hands. I'm OK with not being in control. I am a control freak, every show-runner is, but I'm happy to let go of this control.

Q: I'm not one of those guys who writes every single word. I empower other writer-producers on staff, they do a better job that way. I don't want to develop a drug habit to meet the output level. But the nature of horror genre means there is a heightened, visceral, Grand Guignol kind of aspect to it.

The vampire idea is basically people feeding on other people. It's a horrifying concept once you look at.

Q: So let's talk about sex.

A: The vampire metaphor as sex is built into the whole mystique of vampires. There is an exchange of bodily fluid, lust, hunger, passion. French refer to orgasm as "the little death." That's one of the reasons vampires have been so popular as literary creatures, because they are sex.

Q: But you've made it very explicit.

A: I have to nod to Charlene Harris, the writer of books. The sex is pretty graphic. That's part of the appeal. She created a grab bag of horror, romance, humor, social satire, all in this little southern town.

But it is insane and fantastic and ridiculous. Even when we use the vampires as metaphors for the gay and lesbian community, for people of color.

Q: When the show started, I remember your giving interviews talking about how "True Blood" was a kind of metaphor for the ostracizing of minorities. Has the show veered away from this?

A: Vampires are mostly crazy and vicious and amoral. I don't say this is a metaphor for gays and lesbians and transgenders, it's more about getting to explore the dynamic of 'fear of the other' in the way that isn't really that serious because of the nature of the show.

You don't need a show saying hating gays and lesbians is wrong. "True Blood" is mostly about entertainment and escape, that's been the joy of five years, after another show ("Six Feet Under") that looked at mortality.

Q: How did you map out this season?

A: For me the jumping off point was watching the Republican primaries, watching Michelle Bachman, Rick Santorum, and asking what would it be like to have a theocracy in America - which is way more terrifying than any fictional monster could ever be.

Our jumping off point was "OK, what is a vampire theocracy?" You don't really see vampires being religious creatures. They are excluded from God. But what if there was a vampire bible? A religion? Theocracy? How would that impact our human characters, or vampire characters? I haven't really seen that before.

Q: Why Rick Santorum?

A: What's terrifying is how many people agree with him.

Chris Meloni comes in, he is the guardian of the blood. Supposedly they have a vial of blood of the first vampire - like a Catholic icon. The governing body of vampires is like the Catholic church plus the Supreme Court for vampires. But it's a very secret organization.

Q: Does Sooki fall in love this season?

A: We didn't set out to top ourselves, but we do try not to repeat.

Q: People seem to be naked a lot on the show this season.

A: In the beginning, people were like, "Really, you want me to be naked? I don't know how I feel about that." Now everyone's naked. Especially if you're a shifter or a werewolf, you need to be naked. It doesn't make sense otherwise.

It's no coincidence that so many of the cast members are not American, are European or Australian. It's less of big deal for them. Then the Americans went, "Oh. OK." Sam Trammel was making a joke, "I'm basically naked for the last 3 episodes." He's totally cool with it. But I've never forced anybody to do something outside comfort zone.

The vampire thing - if anyone forced me into corner and said: what is this show about? It's about primal desire. Certainly primal desire, one of those is sex, and nakedness and animal nature. Not having civilizing influence of clothes. Getting back to that primeval thing we all climbed out of.

Q: What other projects do you have coming?

A: I have tons of things I want to write. I have a movie in development at Paramount - "The F Word." Elan Mastai is the writer - I read his spec script. It's a big commercial comedy.

This movie I wrote, "What the Matter with Margie?" is currently being financed. It stars Elizabeth Banks, directed by Dan Minahan, about a woman who has a bad day and starts fighting back. Dark comedy. I wrote it 11 years ago. We should be shooting in January.

Q: So you want to go back to movies?

A: I'm a little old for the TV grind. I would like to play around in the feature world. It's a little scary, seems like impossible to do anything these days. But I don't want to go from being a workaholic to being another workaholic. I need to create more psychic space.

Is America heeding Watergate's lessons, 40 years on?

Four decades after Watergate, experts and protagonists in the 20th century's worst US political scandal worry that its lessons are melting away, amid deepening Washington dysfunction and a return of sweeping presidential power.

Sunday marks exactly 40 years since a handful of third-rate burglars were arrested at the tony Washington building as they broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters.

What followed was a series of revelations about hush money, espionage, secret recordings and an elaborate cover-up that shocked the world -- a scandal so explosive it reached the highest echelons of power and ultimately brought down president Richard Nixon, who resigned in disgrace in August 1974.

Much of what we know about Watergate first came to light through the gumshoe reporting of The Washington Post's Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, whose work became the user's manual for investigative reporting.

But a man who had a profound effect on the aftermath of Watergate said students of history should focus directly on the occupant of the White House at the time, and his terrifying abuse of executive authority.

"It is not a journalism story. It's all about Richard Nixon," historian, author and retired professor Stanley Kutler told AFP.

It was Kutler's successful 1990s lawsuit against Nixon and the National Archives that forced the release of the long-suppressed tapes from the recording system that the president had ordered installed in the White House.

The recordings, he said, show a paranoid and vengeful president who spent an inordinate amount of time ordering underlings to dig up dirt on his opponents.

"Nixon had enemies, imagined and real," many of whom had emerged in the heat of a divisive Vietnam war when Washington was overrun with thousands of protesters, Kutler said.

"From Vietnam, we didn't learn the lesson that there are limits to American power." And Watergate showed Americans "the limits of presidential power," he said.

"Take those two events, Vietnam and Watergate, and you get a new country after that."

Woodward and Bernstein last Sunday were quick to point to the "enormous" crimes committed by Nixon and the various "wars" he launched -- against the anti-war movement, the press, Democrats who threatened to rob him of a second term, and the Watergate cover-up and obstruction of justice.

"Really what we found is that his White House became, to a remarkable extent, a criminal enterprise such as we've never had in our history," Bernstein told CBS.

Americans have always had a healthy distrust of government. It's part of the country's makeup, said Steve Billet, who directs the Masters in Legislative Affairs program at George Washington University.

But as Watergate unfolded, "the government turned into the enemy," Billet said. "It became the fulfillment of a prophecy that government might endanger our liberties, and it did."

As Americans remained suspicious of the potential for malfeasance and abuse in the White House, that dire assessment undermined confidence in the government and the president, and that persists to this day, Billet and others say.

Kutler said he believes Watergate "had a lot to do with superheating our political climate," in which partisanship is the order of the day on Capitol Hill.

"Everything is done in the context of politics today," he said. "This is the way our minds are working now."

The investigation of Watergate and its vast cover-up ultimately sent 40 Nixon aides and others to jail.

Among them was John Dean, who was counsel to Nixon at the time of the Watergate break-in and eventually cooperated with the probe.

He now warns of a return to excessive executive power, particularly in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks.

"Watergate's warning has steadily lost its power over the years, particularly given fear of terrorism during the past decade," Dean wrote this week in The New York Times.

"That fear has been used to justify levels of presidential power that Nixon could have only dreamed possible."

Dean cites a long list of presidential excesses: Ronald Reagan's abuses during the Iran-Contra episode; Bill Clinton's deceit during the Monica Lewinsky affair; George W. Bush's commitment to war in Iraq based on "fake intelligence;" and President Barack Obama's continued detention of US citizens who are deemed terror threats.

And with abuse inevitably inviting scandal, it may be just a matter of time before a new bombshell like the one 40 years ago.

"I can certainly imagine another Watergate," said author Thomas Mallon, whose book "Watergate: A Novel" came out in February.

With information the most valued currency in politics, the next great scandal "would certainly involve something like hacking," Mallon said.

"People have learned to be more cautious," he said, but "at some point in American history, there will be some scandal that eclipses Watergate."

(AP) ? Syrian government forces pounded areas in the central province of Homs on Sunday in a renewed push to regain control of rebel-held territories, and activists said at least 38 people were killed in shelling there over the past 24 hours.

The assault focused on the town of Qusair, near the border with Lebanon, where activists reported at least six people died on Sunday alone. Three others died in shelling of the town of Talbiseh, north of Homs city, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The mortars came down on Qusair by the dozens," said Abu al-Hoda, a Qusair-based activist. He said women and children have been huddled for days in basements of apartment buildings, too fearful to come out. On Saturday, 29 people died in violence across Homs, according to activists.

Also Sunday, Syrian forces unleashed a new round of heavy shelling and sent reinforcements to a mountainous area near the coastal city of Latakia where hundreds of rebels have set up base and which has also been the scene of fierce fighting in recent days.

The fighting between government troops backed by helicopter gunships and armed groups in the area of Haffa began on Tuesday. Rami Abdul-Rahman, the director of the Observatory said at least 58 soldiers have been killed and more than 200 wounded in the operation there since.

He said the heavy losses indicate the seriousness of the challenge in the mountainous area where "hundreds" of rebels are entrenched. His estimated death toll could not be independently verified.

State-run news agency SANA said "terrorist groups" in Haffa attacked public and private institutions on Saturday and committed "heinous" crimes against civilians, setting fire to the national hospital and forcing people to leave their homes. It said troops killed a number of them and arrested several others, adding it was still pursuing gunmen and working to restore security to the area.

Six children were among 10 people killed by a shell that exploded in a house where they had taken cover during the fighting in the region on Saturday, the Observatory said.

Thousands have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March last year and activists put the toll at more than 13,000. International envoy Kofi Annan brokered a cease-fire that went into effect on April 12 but has since been violated every day by both sides of the conflict.

Armed rebels have stepped up their attacks on government troops recently, taking their fight against President Bashar Assad to the capital Damascus, which on Friday saw some of the most intense fighting since the 15-month uprising began.

In northern Syria, thousands took part Sunday in the funeral for nine people who died in reported shelling Saturday night of the town of Maaret al-Numan in Idlib province.

Amateur video posted online by activists Sunday showed a large crowd taking part in the funeral procession. The victims were placed on makeshift stretchers which were carried in the streets as people chanted and mourned their death.

Meanwhile, Syria's main opposition group in exile, the Syrian National Council, elected a Kurdish dissident as its new leader at a meeting in Turkey, a council statement said.

Abdulbaset Sieda, a 56-year-old activist who has been living for many years in exile in Sweden, was the only candidate to replace liberal opposition leader Burhan Ghalioun for the three-month presidency. He was elected unanimously during an SNC meeting Saturday night in Istanbul that stretched into early hours Sunday.

The Paris-based Ghalioun presided over the council since it was created last August but recently offered to step down over mounting criticism of his leadership and repeated renewals of his three-month term. Several prominent Syrian dissidents have quit the group calling it an "autocratic" organization no better than Assad's authoritarian rule.

They also complained the group was dominated by Islamists, including the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood.

The Syrian opposition has been hobbled by disorganization and infighting since the popular revolt against Assad began in March 2012. Its international backers have repeatedly appealed for the movement to pull together and work as one unit. The SNC itself has been plagued by infighting, hampering efforts by Western and Arab nations to help the opposition.

Sieda is a secular member of Syria's minority Kurd community. He is seen as a neutral, consensus figure and has said his priority would be to expand the council to include more opposition figures, particularly from Syria's religious minorities.

"Our first mission is to continue with the restructuring of the council. We will also be working on establishing and strengthening relations with the other opposition parties," he said.

His elevation to the post of SNC chief could be part of an attempt to appeal to Syria's significant Kurdish minority, which has largely stayed on the sidelines of the uprising. The community is deeply suspicious that Sunni Arabs who dominate the opposition will be no more likely to provide them greater rights than what they have had under Assad's regime.

"He is an academic. He's also well-known, a moderate man. We shouldn't claim that he has Islamic tendencies or secular tendencies. He has been approved and accepted by everyone," Abdel Hamid Al Attassi, a member of the SNC, said of Sieda.
