CLAYTON, N.J. (AP) ? Something struck Toni Fiorella whenever she would see a mother from her hometown drop two teenage sons off at the laundromat to do the family's wash. She didn't know them by name, but they were always respectful. Their mother must be on to something, Fiorella thought.
"It's good," she said. "She's making them responsible."
Now, authorities say, those same boys are accused of killing a 12-year-old neighborhood girl and stuffing her body into a recycling bin near their home. Authorities say she was lured with the promise of new parts for the beloved bicycle she was riding before she disappeared.
Some of the 8,000 residents of Clayton saw the boys as Fiorella did, many others as troublesome teens with reputations for stealing bikes. But even some of those who saw a lawless side of the 15- and 17-year-old brothers have a hard time imagining them committing such a violent crime.
Sixteen-year-old Na'eem Williams, who described himself as a close friend of the 15-year-old, said that he knew the brothers to take bicycles but that it was a leap to think them capable of a horrendous crime.
"I know they didn't do nothing like that," he said. "I know they couldn't, especially not with a young girl."
Authorities have not discussed a motive and have not released the names of the brothers because they are charged as juveniles. The Associated Press is withholding them for the same reason.
Deputy Public Defender Jeffrey Wintner said his office was representing both defendants, though a private attorney had been assigned to handle one of the cases. He said the office would have no comment.
The boys were charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in the death of Autumn Pasquale, a well-known and well-liked seventh-grader who disappeared Saturday afternoon in the town 25 miles south of Philadelphia. Her body was found Monday night in the recycling bin behind a vacant house next to the boys' home.
Autumn's mother, Jennifer Cornwell, told reporters Tuesday that she felt as though her daughter had been treated "like a piece of trash" because of where her body was recovered. The girl's father, Anthony Pasquale, a postal worker in Clayton, said he is familiar with the family of the suspects.
"Everybody knows everybody," in the town of 8,000, he said, "whether they're friends or acquaintances."
The boys, who have other brothers who are not charged in the case, were themselves seen at a vigil held Monday night for Autumn. The younger boy apparently exchanged messages with Autumn's teenage brother on Facebook on Sunday.
The brother, A.J. Pasquale, wrote on his page that police, search dogs and the media were involved in the search. "thts good," was the reply from an account that appeared to belong to the 15-year-old suspect.
People who know the boys say the younger suspect is a sophomore at Clayton High School and has been on the wrestling team. The older boy, they say, attends Bankbridge Developmental Center in Sewell, a school for students with social, behavioral and academic problems. He was seen outside the family's home less often, neighbors say.
Beverly Davis said she went to school with Autumn's father and the suspects' mother.
"We are not surprised by who the suspects were," Davis said. "We're not surprised at all. They're not always on the right side of the law."
Davis said one boy stole one of her children's bikes. And the boys' father told the Star-Ledger newspaper of Newark that their sons were known for stealing bikes, and that one son had previously been charged with theft.
Naomi Sampson, 76, said that her family has had a home for a century half a block from the boys' home ? and that the boys' family has lived there about as long. She saw the boys grow up, she said.
"We know they're troubled," she said.
But others who observed the boys found them to act the right way around adults, to smile and be courteous. Fiorella, for example, said she thought it was unusual to see two teenage boys doing laundry.
Authorities say their mother saw something in one of their Facebook postings that gave her cause to call police Monday. It was that call, officials said, that led investigators to the body and her sons.
She has not returned messages from the AP. The boys' father told reporters that he has not seen the boys in a year and has not seen much of them in the past seven years or so.
The teens are due in court Friday for a hearing to determine whether they are to remain in custody. Prosecutors say they may ask that the case be moved to adult court.
Both boys are charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, disposing of a body, tampering with evidence and theft. The younger boy is also charged with luring, allegedly telling Autumn to come over to trade bike parts.
Funeral services for Autumn are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Glassboro, following a public viewing at 8 a.m.

Following is the full text of the NHL's offer for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in order to preserve a full, 82-game season that the National Hockey League presented Tuesday to the NHL Players' Association (along with the accompanying commentary and descriptions also provided to the NHLPA).
While the original intention was not to release the details of the offer publicly, not surprisingly there have been widespread reports attempting to describe and characterize the terms of the offer that understandably are incomplete. As a result, we believe that full public disclosure at this stage is both necessary and appropriate.
NHL PROPOSAL TO SAVE 82-GAME SEASON
1. Term:
? Six-year Agreement with mutual option for a seventh year.
2. HRR Accounting:
? Current HRR Accounting subject to mutual clarification of existing interpretations and settlements.
3. Applicable Players' Share:
? For each of the six (6) years of the CBA (and any additional one-year option) the Players' Share shall be Fifty (50) percent of Actual HRR.
4. Payroll Range:
? Payroll Range will be computed using existing methodology. For the 2012/13 season, the Payroll Range will be computed assuming HRR will remain flat year-over-year (2011/12 to 2012/13) at $3.303 Billion (assuming Preliminary Benefits of $95 Million).
? 2012/13 Payroll Range........................ Lower Limit = $43.9 Million Midpoint = $51.9 Million Upper Limit = $59.9 Million
? Appropriate "Transition Rules" to allow Clubs to exceed Upper Limit for the 2012/13 season only (but in no event will Club's Averaged Club Salary be permitted to exceed the pre-CBA Upper Limit of $70.2 Million).
5. Cap Accounting: ? Payroll Lower Limit must be satisfied without performance bonuses.
? All years of existing SPCs with terms in excess of five (5) years will be accounted for and charged against a team's Cap (at full AAV) regardless of whether or where the Player is playing. In the event any such contract is traded during its term, the related Cap charge will travel with the Player, but only for the year(s) in which the Player remains active and is being paid under his NHL SPC. If, at some subsequent point in time the Player retires or ceases to play and/or receive pay under his NHL SPC, the Cap charge will automatically revert (at full AAV) to the Club that initially entered into the contract for the balance of its term.
? Money paid to Players on NHL SPCs (one-ways and two-ways) in another professional league will not be counted against the Players' Share, but all dollars paid in excess of $105,000 will be counted against the NHL Club's Averaged Club Salary for the period during which such Player is being paid under his SPC while playing in another professional league.
? In the context of Player Trades, participating Clubs will be permitted to allocate Cap charges and related salary payment obligations between them, subject to specified parameters. Specifically, Clubs may agree to retain, for each of the remaining years of the Player's SPC, no more than the lesser of:
(i) $3 million of a particular SPC's Cap charge or
(ii) 50 percent of the SPC's AAV ("Retained Salary Transaction"). In any Retained Salary Transaction, salary obligations as between Clubs would be allocated on the same percentage basis as Cap charges are being allocated. So, for instance, if an assigning Club agrees to retain 30% of an SPC's Cap charge over the balance of its term, it will also retain an obligation to reimburse the acquiring Club 30% of the Player's contractual compensation in each of the remaining years of the contract. A Club may not have more than two (2) contracts as to which Cap charges have been allocated between Clubs in a Player Trade, and no more than $5 million in allocated Cap charges in the aggregate in any one season.
6. System Changes:
? Entry Level System commitment will be limited to two (2) years (covering two full seasons) for all Players who sign their first SPC between the ages of 18 and 24 (i.e., where the first year of the SPC only covers a partial season, SPC must be for three (3) years).
? Maintenance of existing Salary Arbitration System subject to:
(i) total mutuality of rights with regard to election as between Player and Club, and
(ii) eligibility for election moved to five years of professional experience (from the current four years).
? Group 3 UFA eligibility for Players who are 28 or who have eight (8) Accrued Seasons (continues to allow for early UFA eligibility -- age 26).
? Maximum contract length of five (5) years.
? Limit on year-to-year salary variability on multi-year SPCs

Jason Thompson, the son of the former Wisconsin governor, was caught on camera Sunday making those remarks duing a brunch hosted by the Kenosha County Republican Party.
"We have the opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago ? or Kenya," said Jason Thompson, an attorney at a large Milwaukee law firm.
The comment drew laughs from the crowd, with one woman jokingly adding, "We are taking donations for that Kenya trip."
The video was taken by a Democratic Party operative and posted at BuzzFeed Politics on Sunday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Obama's father was Kenyan, but the president was born in Hawaii.
Jason Thompson, 38, has been involved in his father's efforts to win a Senate seat and has represented the candidate at some events.
"The governor has addressed this with his son, just like any father would do," the campaign said in a statement. "Jason Thompson said something he should not have, and he apologizes."
Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin is running against Thompson. Her campaign's spokesman, John Kraus, said Monday that the Thompson campaign is becoming increasingly desperate and dishonest.
The candidate himself "has not apologized for these comments, nor has he disavowed them," Kraus wrote. "Thompson needs to start taking responsibility for what his campaign says and does."

The Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 1,4/35 ($1,843 list) ?is a fast wide-angle optic, available for Nikon and Canon D-SLR cameras. The full-frame lens is priced at a premium?it sells for more than equivalent autofocus lenses from Canon and Nikon, but is extremely sharp throughout its aperture range and displays very little barrel distortion. It is heavy at 1.9 pounds and fairly large for a prime lens at 4.8 by 3.1 inches (HD). ?It supports 72mm filters.
The lens can focus on objects as close to 11.8 inches. This lets you work pretty close to your subject. You can fill the frame with a smaller object, or if you shoot at a wider aperture like f/1.4 you can seriously blur the background behind your subject. There are nine aperture blades, which create smooth out of focus highlights when the lens is stopped down just a little bit.
I used Imatest to measure the lens's sharpness when paired with the Nikon D600. Its resolution is impressive, even at f/1.4, where it exceeds the 1,800 lines per picture height?scoring 2,243 lines. Stopping the lens down improves the resolution?by f/2.8 it hits 2,700 lines, it nears the 3,000-line mark at f/5.6 and exceeds it at f/8. The lens does exhibit 1.4 percent barrel distortion, which gives a slight curve to straight lines. This amount of distortion is fairly easy to correct in Photoshop or Lightroom.
If you're willing?or prefer to?focus manually, the Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 1,4/35 will reward you with some compelling images. It's extremely sharp, even at its widest aperture. Opening it up all the way makes it possible to shoot in very low light, and to separate your subject from the background. The lens isn't inexpensive, but if you've got the money, you won't be disappointed with its image quality.

The battle against obesity seems to have turned largely into a war on soda. All across the nation there are calls for taxes on sugar-sweetened drinks and limitations on where they can be sold. The most well-publicized salvo is New York City?s ban on large sugary drinks sold in restaurants and movie theaters and from street carts.
Beverage companies are scrambling to show they?re willing to change their ways to help avoid even more strong-arming. They?re marketing smaller drink sizes and running their own public awareness campaigns for healthy eating.
Their latest preemptive move, announced this week, literally puts the decision to guzzle a sugary drink at a consumer?s fingertips.? Soft-drink makers, including Coca-Cola and Pepsico, say they will list the calorie counts for sodas directly on the buttons of their vending machines. The new industry-designed machines go way beyond government proposals, which would only require that calorie counts be displayed on the side of a machine.
Before someone presses 240 ? the number of calories in a 20-ounce Coke ? the machine will scroll a reminder that they can always select a lower-calorie alternative. The machines, which go public in 2013, will also feature small decals with sayings such as ?Calories Count: Check Then Choose.?
David Just, the director of Cornell University?s center for behavioral economics in child nutrition programs, said he thinks the machines are a good idea and make a lot more sense than much of the anti-soda legislation. He said he?s worried that moves like the New York City ban will backfire.
?If we do something that specifically targets soda and we don?t know that it will have a huge impact on obesity, we are taking a big risk that it will be ineffective while creating a lot of resentment from consumers and retailers. If we tick off both sides in this transaction, it will be a lot more difficult to introduce new legislation in the future,? said Just.
Just said he thought it makes more sense to get beverage companies to make voluntary changes like the calorie-aware vending machines. He thinks there are other things they can do too.
?Rather than doing a hard sell on sugary drinks to kids and teens, beverage companies could market artificially sweetened and low calorie beverages to them instead,? he said.
Just said this has never been done on a large scale before and his group at Cornell has shown it could significantly lower the consumption of sugary drinks while raising the sales of healthier beverages.
?These companies aren?t selling sugar, they?re selling soda. They don?t care if their products contain sugar or not, so this type of change could be a win for everyone,? Just said.
Yale University?s Kelly Brownell can be pardoned for not believing beverage company tactics alone will help lower soda consumption and lower obesity rates. Brownell has led the charge to legislate sugar-laden beverages for more than a decade.
?In this country, we start by hoping people will change their behavior on their own. If the default approach of imploring people to change their ways doesn?t work, then we ask the government to step in and take action,? he said.
To Brownell, regulating soda is public health policy 101 ? and it has plenty of precedents. He points to smoking, seat belts and immunization as examples where there was a lot of opposition to regulation at first, but the objections soon receded.
In order to address the obesity crisis, Brownell said he believes we have to start regulating somewhere, and the evidence for the dietary evils of soda is so strong that it makes sense to start there.
Truly no one can stand up for soda on nutritional grounds no matter which side of the debate they are on. The consumer group Center for Science in the Public Interest says that the average American drinks more than 40 ounces of sweetened drinks daily, with groups like teenage boys averaging double that amount. Sugary drinks are now the single greatest source of added sugar in the American diet ? and they offer no nutritional value.
A trio of studies in a recent issue of The New England Journal of Medicine found that sugar-sweetened beverages make a unique contribution to our expanding waistlines. One investigation was a decades-long study of more than 33,000 Americans, which showed sugary beverages interact with genes that affect weight, magnifying weight gain in people who are predisposed by heredity to piling on the pounds. The two other experiments found that giving children and teens calorie-free alternatives to the sugary drinks leads to less weight gain over time.
Dr. Lu Qi, an assistant professor in the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, said he thinks a combination of public policy and industry changes are needed. Most important, he said, people must understand how serious a health crisis soda consumption has become.
?However we do it, the more solid evidence we have, the easier it will be to convince people to give up sugar-sweetened beverages,? he said.

Irish construction continues to fall
Activity in the Irish construction industry weakened again in September as new business continued to fall.
The Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Managers index stood at 41.9 in September, after a reading of 40.7 in August.
Any figure under 50 signals contraction in a sector, while over 50 signals growth. The industry has been in decline for over five years.
The index examines three areas -- housing, commercial and civil engineering.
Civil engineering saw the biggest decline last month, with the index falling to 30.8 from 35.6, the fastest fall in activity since December 2010.
Both housing and commercial activity decreased at slower rates in September, with the weakest reduction seen for activity on commercial projects.
Ulster Bank said that new orders decreased amid weak client demand and strong competition for any new business.? This led to a further reduction in employment numbers and the fall was the fastest in 16 months.
Input costs rose for the second month in row in September, mainly due to higher oil and fuel costs.
However, the level of optimism improved slightly over the month due to expectations of improving new orders from overseas markets.
''The survey results for September show that while the pace of contraction eased very slightly last month, the sector continues to exhibit widespread weakness,'' commented Ulster Bank's chief economist Simon Barry.
Barry said that in contrast to the persistent declines in the building industry, last week's manufacturing and services PMIs both recorded expanding activity levels.
He said this highlighted the ongoing divergence in trends between many areas of domestic demand which continue to struggle, and the internationally traded sectors of the economy which are managing to hold up relatively well.
