Olympics: NBA players say they should continue to compete in future Olympic Games

LONDON -- Add LeBron James to the list of players who don't want to see the London Olympics become the last one before a restrictive age cap is instituted for men's basketball, limiting the tournament to those 23 or younger.

"I disagree with that," he said.

Why?

"Because I'm 27," he said with a smile.

The charmingly made point illustrated a widespread feeling among the superstar players on Team USA -- that although they might be jet-setting millionaires dozens of times over, they still crave representing their country at the Olympics.

"I feel like we should definitely have a choice," forward Kevin Love said. "When the time comes, I know that they'll make a decision. But my stance is that the players should have the right to choose if they want to play in the Olympics, because this might only come around once."

The Americans take on lightly regarded Tunisia in their next game Tuesday.

But in the aftermath of a blowout opening win over France, several players cited forward Blake Griffin in their defense of an Olympic status quo, in the face of suggestions by NBA Commissioner David Stern and some team owners to impose an age limit.

The 23-year-old Griffin was chosen for the Olympic team, but lost the opportunity when he had to back out because of a knee injury suffered during training camp.

"He couldn't play in 2016, if that goes into effect," said Chris Paul, his teammate on the Los Angeles Clippers.

The

players are competing on the 20th anniversary of the original "Dream Team" at the 1992 Barcelona Games, the first Olympics at which NBA professionals were allowed to compete. Until then, the men's basketball competition was limited to amateurs and pros from Europe and South America.

It has never had an age limit, per se.

But Stern and owners such as Mark Cuban want to both curtail the risk of injury to players to whom NBA teams are paying vast salaries, and create a "World Cup" of basketball from which they can make more money than they do from the Olympics.

The idea harkens to men's soccer, which does have a 23-year-old age limit in the Olympics, in large part because the giant European clubs have resisted allowing their top stars to play in yet another international competition.

But even the head of the international soccer federation, Sepp Blatter, has encouraged young soccer stars to take a stand against their teams if they want to play in the Olympics. Blatter cited superstar Lionel Messi, who played at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a 21-year-old against the wishes of Barcelona FC and won the gold medal with Argentina.

"Everyone should embrace the spirit and play in the Games if they want to," Blatter said. "The problem is that the national associations are not making the right contacts with the clubs. I think the players themselves would like to come."

The basketball players seem to demonstrate that.

Paul said he doesn't see a change happening, and even Stern has acknowledged the issue isn't an urgent one. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said he doesn't expect anybody to seriously study the issue until after the London Olympics.

But Kobe Bryant has been among those most vocal about his opposition, originally calling the idea of an age limit "stupid," and contesting the notion that owners need a hedge against injuries.

Bryant said it's more likely for players to get hurt playing pick-up games during the offseason against "a bunch of bums" than during the Olympics, when players are closely monitored as they would be during the NBA season.

"To me, playing on an Olympic team is actually better, if I was an owner," he said.

Beyond that, Bryant said, the Americans can't expect to compete against the rest of the world if they use only younger players. It was an amateur team's failure to win gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in Korea, after all, that led to the creation of the Dream Team, and everybody agrees that other countries have only grown stronger since then.

"We'll be in trouble," Bryant said. "Guys playing against us will be grown men and we'll be in trouble. If you just look at the Olympics as a whole, it's about putting your best athletes to the front to showcase. That's what it's about. If an athlete doesn't want to play, that's his decision. If a team feels some type of way [about] him performing, it's the team's responsibility to have those conversations with the athlete. That's how it should be.

"I don't see why it's even a topic of discussion," he said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Boston had wasted a five-run lead by the time Pedro Ciriaco stepped to the plate in the ninth inning Saturday night and hit a hard fly ball toward center field. He thought Curtis Granderson would catch it.

Then Granderson went in on the ball and sprinted back in an attempt to catch up.

"I thought I had a chance," Ciriaco said, "so I run like a hurricane."

The ball landed for a go-ahead triple as Granderson fell, and the Red Sox came away with a dramatic 8-6 win over the New York Yankees after Vicente Padilla allowed a tying, two-run homer in the eighth to nemesis Mark Teixeira.

Adrian Gonzalez had four RBIs for the Red Sox, who built a 6-1 lead for Jon Lester.

"We were good tonight, and we were lucky," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "He hit that ball, a knuckleball, 380 feet. It's tough to catch. He's pretty hot right now, so I'd say he was good and we were lucky."

A three-time All-Star, Granderson had expected to make the catch.

"I didn't think it was hit as hard as it was," he said. "And, by the time I tried to get back on it, I couldn't get enough steam to get back to it."

Jacoby Ellsbury's one-out walk off Rafael Soriano (2-1) preceded the hit by Ciriaco, who boosted the lead to two runs when he scored on Dustin Pedroia's sacrifice fly.

Playing designated hitter while David Ortiz is on the disabled list, the 26-year-old Ciriaco had three hits to raise his average to .356 in 59 at-bats. He also had the go-ahead hit in Boston's only other win over the Yankees in eight tries this year, a two-run double off Phil Hughes in the second game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park on July 7.

"He just comes in and plays, has good at-bats, runs the bases well," Valentine said. "Makes us a better team."

It was Granderson's second fielding flub against the Red Sox. In that July 7 game, the Yankees were ahead 3-1 when Granderson called for Daniel Nava's fly ball and allowed it to bounce off his glove as right fielder Darnell McDonald moved past him. Granderson initially was charged with an error, but the official scorer later changed it to McDonald's.

"We haven't seen much of that, him getting turned around like that," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "But it just shows that it's part of the game and sometimes players are going to have the wrong read on balls. It's going to happen in the course of the season, and it won't be the last one, I'm sure."

Andrew Miller (3-1) got one out for the win, and Alfredo Aceves finished for his 22nd save in 26 chances.

New York started to erase its early deficit in the fifth, when Jayson Nix hit a two-run homer and Derek Jeter had an RBI grounder. Then came another matchup of Padilla and Teixeira, who have been jawing at each other from a distance.

Padilla allowed a leadoff single to pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez in the eighth, then threw a called third strike past Jeter. Granderson hit two foul drives deep down the right-field line, the second missing a home run by about a foot, before striking out.

Padilla fell behind 2-0 in the count to Teixeira, then lobbed in a 51 mph curveball for a called strike. Teixeira turned on the next pitch, sending it deep into the right-field bleachers. He stared at the ball as he took four short steps up the line, then went into his home run trot.

Padilla wouldn't discuss anything with media. As reporters approached him in the locker room, he said: "About what? One bad day?" turned and walked out.

Teixeira hit a go-ahead, two-run triple off Padilla in the seventh inning at Fenway Park on July 6, sparking a weekend war of words. Padilla accused Teixeira of wronging Latino teammates when they played together on the Texas Rangers in 2006-07, and Teixeira said Padilla threw at hitters and "didn't have a lot of friends in the game." Padilla responded Teixeira would "be better off playing a women's sport."

Teixeira said he's been trying to put the tiff behind.

"Emotion is part of the game, but if you let the emotions get the best of you, especially as a hitter, you swing too hard or you swing at pitches over your head, that does you no good," he said.

Following a rain delay of 2 hours, 4 minutes, Gonzalez hit an RBI double and scored on Will Middlebrook's two-run double in the first, then hit a three-run homer off CC Sabathia in the fifth.

Chris Stewart's first home run since September cut the gap to 3-1 in the third, but Gonzalez boosted the lead with two outs in the fifth when he lined a home run into the right-field bleachers. Gonzalez leads the majors in batting average with runners in scoring position at .418 (41 for 98).

New Yankees right fielder Ichiro Suzuki raced into the right-center gap to rob Gonzalez of an extra-base hit with a catch just in front of the warning track in the seventh.

Lester, who had been 0-3 with a 10.42 ERA in his previous four starts, allowed four runs and four hits in six innings and watched his bullpen blow a lead he left with for the fifth time. He fanned Robinson Cano in the sixth for his 1,000th strikeout.

"We needed to win that game," Lester said. "Guys came back and kept fighting. That was big for us."

NOTES: Valentine caused a stir before the game when he said the Red Sox medical staff instructed him not to play LF Carl Crawford four days in a row, a mandate Valentine said he ignored earlier in the month after the left fielder came off the DL. ... Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona visited with Boston players before the game in the Red Sox clubhouse, preparing for his job as a broadcaster for Sunday night's game on ESPN. ... Video of projects - Family Woodworking

Man all i can say is you one heck of skilled man. I agree with Larry. Would make a great marketing video with a few changes.

I saw some side tables that i would love to see more of. Looked like you had the corners cut out. The glimpse at them was a great teaser.

That lamp you made is one of my favorites i love the flutes. Also that fireplace mantle man i am dying to haveing something like that in my home one day. I even bought a book on mantle design but what you have is better than i have seen in the whole book. You have any pics of the build process for that?

Love the bed with teh curved footboard. Would prefer it without the spindles on the corners. I could see myself kicking the heck out of those with my feet.

And that bench seat i think you called it or its called a Nantucket thats on my to do list. Like so many projects.

Great video Brian, me thinks you hinting to loyl that you want a nice camera that can do both stills and video. But heck you doing fine with what you got.

Very inspirational and your wife sure knows how to decorate.

Now imagine what that lot would have cost to buy in this form of quality and material. Pretty good justification for your shop in my view. Lets not forget the pieces are designed to fit.

Iran: Strait Of Hormuz Under Control, No Plans To Close

TEHRAN, Iran -- A top Iranian naval commander said Monday that Tehran's forces have full control over the Gulf's strategic Strait of Hormuz, but have no plans to try to close the route for one-fifth of the world's oil.

The comments by Adm. Ali Reza Tangsiri, acting commander of the Revolutionary Guard naval forces, appear designed to reinforce Iran's claims of military dominance over the Strait as U.S. naval forces boost their presence in the Gulf.

"Enemies regularly say Iran is after closing the Strait of Hormuz. But we say that wisdom does not recommend closing the strait while Iran is using the Strait of Hormuz," Tangsiri was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

He did not elaborate, but the remarks appear to point to Iran's efforts to build pipelines to Asian markets and develop other Iranian ports with direct access to the Indian Ocean.

Tangsiri's message also is seen as an effort to reassure world oil markets that Iran ? which was OPEC's second-largest producer before recent sanctions ? will not disrupt supplies. Oil prices have been swayed by worries that Iran could choke off tanker traffic in retaliation for tighter sanctions over its nuclear program.

Iran has issued threats to close the strait for several months, but has made no attempts to block tanker traffic. Iran's warnings have increased this month after a boycott of Iranian oil by the 27-nation European Union, which has sharply cut into Iran's oil sales.

Last week, a group of Iranian lawmakers backed proposals that would push government to close the waterway. Yet, Iran's parliament has not taken any action on the case and it's unclear whether lawmakers could force such a military move on the strait, which is jointly controlled by Iran and Oman.

The West suspects Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon. Iran says it only seeks reactors for peaceful purposes such as power generation and medical treatment.

Many of us go through life questioning what the future holds or trying to work out what might happen just around the corner. ?Some of us visit psychics and mediums in the hope of finding answers to some of our questions relating to the future. ?Others of us have a sense of futility or fatality about the future, thinking in terms of "what will be will be".

A smaller number of people actively work to invent their own future, irrespective of the circumstances that they are faced with. ?Steve Jobs was one person whose life was shaped by this pattern of thought. ?He shaped his own future and also the lives of many others because of his way of thinking.

His idea was to create "stuff" which made life easier and simpler. ?This goal led to the development of many gadgets that define our lives today. ?Having a goal is such a key thing in predicting a persons pathway and ability to invent and achieve things.

Many people try to approach life the opposite way around. ?By this I mean that they learn many techniques and parts of things without having an ultimate goal. ?Yet without that goal, they have no real purpose. ?They are learning nuts and bolts without having a plan to put them together to create a bigger whole.

Successful prediction of the future comes from being able to see a bigger picture than just individual parts. ?In seeing an ideal, or setting a definite goal what you in fact do is set your mind out on a particular pathway. ?The tasks or the goals in themselves lead to the learning of the necessary techniques to get you there. ?The task leads to the acquisition or discovery of technique.

Facebook stock falls 3 pct for the week

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock has had another down week.

It closed on Friday at $30.72, down 3.2 percent from a week ago. Since it went public in mid-May, the stock has been down for five weeks and up for three weeks. It's now 19 percent below its initial public offering price of $38.

Facebook Inc. began trading publicly in mid-May following one of the most anticipated stock offerings in history. The IPO priced at the top of a projected range that Facebook had already boosted just days earlier.

The stock had fallen sharply in the weeks following the IPO, going as low as $25.52.

Investors have been concerned about its ability to keep increasing revenue and make money from its growing mobile audience, though many analysts hold positive long-term opinions.

While the Beach Boys are in the midst of a remarkably successful reunion tour, the family legacies of its members are continuing on in a new group.

California Saga, who made their live debut with the Beach Boys on June 2nd, features Brian Wilson's daughters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson (of Wilson Phillips fame); Mike Love's son and daughter, Christian and Ambha Love; Carl Wilson's son, Justyn Wilson; Dennis Wilson's son, Carl B. Wilson; and Al Jardine's sons, Matt and Adam Jardine. The lineup will also include guitarist Billy Hinsche, Carl Wilson's brother-in-law, who toured with the Beach Boys for decades.

Diehard Beach Boys fans will be familiar with California Saga's?concept: Al Jardine has toured in the past with his sons, Hinsche and the Wilson sisters as the Beach Boys Family and Friends.?

The group is set to perform alongside the Beach Boys on July 10th at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Late last month, Rolling Stone reported that Mike Love had booked Beach Boys shows for this fall?without Brian Wilson.

US stocks plunge after weak June jobs report

Despite preparing for a poor showing, the Dow Jones average plunged 124 points to close at 12,772. The US government reported that only 80,000 jobs were created in June, the third straight month of sluggish growth and weak hiring.

Investors abandoned stocks Friday after the US government reported that only 80,000 jobs were created in June, the third straight month of weak hiring.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 124.20 points to close at 12,772.47. The loss wiped out the Dow's gain for the week.

The reluctance of U.S. employers to add jobs shows that the economy is still struggling three years after the recession officially ended. An average of just 75,000 jobs were created every month in the April-June quarter, far below the 226,000 created every month in the first three months of the year.

"It shows the U.S. economy is losing momentum," said Sharon Stark, chief market strategist at the brokerage firm Sterne Agee. "It's a sign of everyone waiting to see what's next."

Of the 30 stocks in the Dow average, only five rose, including McDonald's and AT&T. The world's largest producer of aluminum, Alcoa, and Caterpillar, the construction equipment maker, were among the hardest-hit Dow stocks with declines of about 3 percent each. Materials and industrial companies are the most likely to suffer if the economy weakens.

The anemic jobs report led investors to shift money into low-risk assets. The price of the 10-year Treasury note rose, sending its yield down to 1.55 percent from 1.60 percent late Thursday. The dollar rose against the euro.

The sluggish growth in American jobs comes at a time when the global economy is also losing pace. Central banks in Europe and China took action Thursday to prop up their sliding economies.

The new signs of economic sluggishness around the world sent commodities prices lower. Crude oil dropped $2.77, or 3 percent, to $84.45 a barrel. The U.S. is the world's biggest oil consumer, and the prospect of lower demand pushed down prices.

Energy stocks followed the price of oil lower. Peabody Energy fell $1.27, or close to 5 percent, to $24.86, while Alpha Natural Resources declined 60 cents, or 6.5 percent, to $8.67.

In other trading on Wall Street, the Standard & Poor's 500 slid 12.90 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,354.68 and the Nasdaq composite fell 38.79 points, or 1.3 percent, to 2,937.33.

One of the reasons stocks fell is that though the jobs report was weak, the country isn't heading into a recession. That suggests the Federal Reserve is less likely to take more action to stimulate the economy, according to Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Advantage Funds.

A new round of bond-buying by the Fed is "quite unlikely," Jacobsen said. The Federal Reserve has made two rounds of bond purchases since the financial crisis to keep interest rates low and encourage banks to lend money.

European markets also lost ground on Friday. A week after investors welcomed an agreement among European leaders to help Spain and Italy, the borrowing rates of both countries rose again. That means bond investors are less willing to loan those countries money at favorable rates.

The yield on the 10-year Spanish government bond rose 0.22 percentage point to 6.96 percent earlier in the day. That's a very high level and could eventually force Spain to seek more financial support from its neighbors in Europe.

European stock indexes slid. Germany's DAX and France's CAC-40 each lost 1.9 percent. Spain's benchmark index slumped 3 percent.

Other Wall Street stocks making big moves included:

? Navistar International. The truck maker's stock fell $4.37, or over 15 percent, to $24.42 on investor worries that the heavy engine and truck maker will have to incur additional costs to get a crucial new engine approved by federal regulators.

? Sequenom Inc. The stock fell 8 cents, or 2 percent, to $3.99 after a California court refused to block a competitor from selling a similar product to Sequenom's Down syndrome test for pregnant women.

? Informatica Corp. The business software maker fell $12, or 28 percent, to $31.36 after warning that its second-quarter results didn't live up to the projections of its management or analysts.
