PFT: Polamalu to have 'significant role' this week

Washington Redskins v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

Ah, the exuberance of youth.

Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris, entering his first professional December, said he?s not worried about the rookie wall.

?I was built for this,? Morris said, via Rich Campbell of the Washington Times. ?I was made for this. It?s just the truth. I can take a lot of beating. I don?t think I?ll ever meet the rookie wall.?

He better not, because the Redskins will need him Monday against the Giants.

Morris is 18 yards short of 1,000, and needs just 81 the rest of the way to break Reggie Brooks? franchise rookie record. For a guy who was hoping to fit in wherever this year, it?s a pretty impressive achievement.

?It would mean a lot,? Morris said. ?I didn?t think I was going to even see the field until the fifth, sixth game. For that to happen would be an honor, especially with such a storied franchise. I?d be thankful and still be humble.?

He?s made adjustments to his game, notably in terms of taking care of himself. He said he never considered getting into a cold tub until since-cut veteran Tim Hightower taught him the benefits, and he?s taken other measures to keep himself ready, such as massages.

?It?s not a pleasure massage,? Morris said. ?Those things hurt, but afterwards you feel a lot better.?

That he?s still fresh has caught the eye of coaches, who never know what to expect from first-year players this time of year.

?He?s been good all year ? I think that?s been the most impressive thing about him,? offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. ?He has never hit a rookie wall. He runs so hard, and I have never seen him wear down at all. He keeps grinding on everything.?

One day Morris will learn how hard it actually is. But for the moment, the young legs are still carrying him.

Chinese UFO reports linked to rocket

Li Peng via NASASpaceflight.com

Waves of light emanate from an object sighted by amateur astronomer Li Feng over China's Sichuan province.

By Alan Boyle

Chinese skywatchers marveled this month over mysterious rays of light in the night sky, and now sharp-eyed analysts are saying those UFO sightings were sparked by a European Ariane 5 rocket that launched two telecommunication satellites from French Guiana.

Amateur astronomers in China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces reported seeing the weird phenomenon on Nov. 11. They watched as a luminous object moved through the heavens, shimmering with rays or rings of light. The reports made a splash on Chinese news websites such as Sina.com, as well as the Astronomy.com.cn discussion forum.

"It is certainly a UFO," one forum poster wrote in Chinese. Another wrote that the UFO was a "blessing from another planet." (I couldn't determine how that comment was meant, because my machine-translation software doesn't have a sarcasm filter.)

For a while, Chinese experts speculated that the object might have been a comet?? but skywatchers soon figured out that the sightings occurred less than an hour after Arianespace sent the Eutelsat 21B and Star One C3 satellites into orbit (from the European Space Agency's South American spaceport, where it was still Nov. 10).

"The detailed analysis of the height of the UFO and the timing of observation leads me to conclude that this was the ESC-A upper stage, 30 minutes after all the fuel leaked out via passification," a Hong Kong observer known as Galactic Penguin SST reported last week on the NASASpaceflight.com forum.

Today, Want China Times said that the Beijing UFO Research Society has reached a similar conclusion.

"The 'rays' were most likely the rocket jettisoning boosters or other parts and entering low Earth orbit after being launched 30 minutes previously," the Taiwan-based online publication reported. It's also possible that the swirls of light came from fuel or vapor emanating from the upper stage. Such?explanations are consistent with a host of other rocket-related UFO sightings over the years, including Russian rocket stages that have been spotted over the Middle East and Scandinavia.

Just for fun, here are a few more such cases from the UFO files:

In Self DefenseIn Self Defense is inspired by the true-life story of a martial arts legend who died at the hand of his own son. After fighting in the jungles of the South Pacific in World War II, Willy Wetzel and his family migrated from Indonesia to America in 1956. Willy opened one of the first martial arts schools in the United States in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He was a pioneer and became known worldwide for his mastery of many martial arts forms. The finest pupil Willy ever taught, was his second son, Roy Wetzel. The Wetzels all had their battle scars, some more visible than others. When Roy returned from Viet Nam with a Purple Heart, he hoped for a peaceful life at home. Instead Roy found himself in a fight with his father. One fateful night, their strained relationship finally came to a head. As Roy's young daughter lay asleep in the next room, a weapon-filled brutal fight between father and son ensued. The aftermath of Willy's last skirmish would leave Roy bloody and beaten and charged by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with Murder. This led to a controversial trial and the original court transcripts contained in the second half of this non-fiction novel give a compelling account of the prolonged legal contest that stirred up many debates. Grace that redeems the moments of our lives

A Christian Science perspective.

By Curt Wahlberg / November 28, 2012

I faintly recall the time in second grade when our teacher put the class in pairs to share lockers for the year. The reason this is notable is that I mistakenly got the impression that I was being paired up with a girl. I didn?t like that idea at that age, and I began to cry. All was quickly better though, when the teacher straightened me out.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

It?s possible that I would have forgotten this incident, except for something that happened many years later at the wedding of another classmate. That long-ago locker partner was there, and much to my surprise, he talked angrily about how in second grade I had thought he was a girl. He spoke as if the experience had marred his schoolboy days and perhaps even still affected him.

I felt bad for the guy. And while I don?t really blame my boyhood self, the fact that he still held those feelings made an impression on me. We?ve all heard people?s stories, or have some of our own, of misunderstandings or of cutting comments that have lasting negative effects. ?You can?t sing, just move your lips,? or ?You?re not athletic,? can ring in a person?s ears years later. Today, I feel a responsibility to help us all find the something that will prevent these incidents ? or disarm them and save everybody from the torment.

It?s the grace of God that saves us. People speak of the eternal salvation that God reveals to us, usually in the context of life after death. But God?s saving grace is a presence in human consciousness and can be felt moment by moment right now. It can be ushered into any situation and held onto, helping redeem each moment of our lives.

For me, as the Bible says, the redeeming process involves an ongoing prayer. The second letter to the Thessalonians includes this prayer: ?That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ? (II Thessalonians 1:12).

The truth of our lives is that we each have a purpose to bring out to help light up the universe and reveal the goodness and value of each one of us. This is our God-given spiritual identity, which is secure and can never be marred. Finding our lives defined by this identity brings a power ? the grace that keeps life going in the right direction. Monitor founder Mary Baker Eddy wrote, ?Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the spiritual idea, ? the reflection of God, ? has come with some measure of power and grace to all prepared to receive Christ, Truth? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 333).

For years after that conversation at the wedding, I would occasionally recall the situation and feel bad. But things have evolved for me. The story now is more one of how my life is devoted to ushering in the grace that shows our lives defined by something eternal, special, and good. It?s not defined by something on the surface that?s played out by misunderstandings and awkward situations.

I hope that my prayer has in some way touched my long-ago locker partner. I?ve certainly seen it touch those around me now. I at least do a better job than I would have before in helping my own grade-school kids feel God?s grace, to let that ultimately be what defines their interaction with others. And I feel that, in general, I?m much more skilled at defusing and even preventing awkward situations.

Where is the divine good, God, who redeems our moments? He is right here for us to express with our thoughts, words, and actions. It?s the spiritual ideal of our lives, the Christ, here for us to glorify in our day-to-day interactions and here to leave the final story of who we are and what we?re about.

Family: NFL great Jack Pardee ill with cancer

HOUSTON (AP) ? Jack Pardee, one of Bear Bryant's "Junction Boys" who went on to become an All-Pro linebacker and an NFL coach, has been diagnosed with gall bladder cancer and has six to nine months to live, his family said Tuesday.

The cancer has spread to other organs and that her 76-year-old father plans to move to a Denver hospice where the College Football Hall of Fame inductee's wife, Phyllis, has been receiving care since having a stroke, daughter Anne Pardee confirmed to The Associated Press.

Anne Pardee said her father was in good spirits despite the diagnosis.

Jack Pardee survived a bout with melanoma when he was 28 and in the middle of his 15-year NFL playing career.

He played only six-man football at Christoval High School in west-central Texas, near San Angelo, before moving on to Texas A&M. Bryant became the Aggies' coach in 1954 and moved their preseason camp to desolate Junction, about 100 miles northwest of San Antonio.

The state endured a severe drought and historic heat wave that year, but Bryant worked his team through the brutal conditions and refused to allow water breaks in an effort to toughest players. Pardee was one of 35 players who made it through to the end of the 10-day camp without quitting.

Pardee played three seasons at Texas A&M and was drafted by Los Angeles in 1957. He played for the Rams from 1957-64, sat out a year to cope with his melanoma, then played seven more seasons. He finished his playing career with the Washington Redskins in 1973.

Pardee stuck with the NFL and was the Chicago Bears' head coach from 1975-77. He coached the Redskins from 1978-80 and was fired after Washington went 6-10. He served as San Diego's defensive coordinator for one season, then returned to Texas to coach the USFL's Houston Gamblers.

Pardee was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986. When the USFL disbanded in 1987, Pardee became the coach at the University of Houston and brought along the fast-paced "Run-and-Shoot" offense that worked well with the Gamblers.

The NCAA levied severe sanctions on the program in 1988, the result of violations committed under previous coach Bill Yeoman. Houston was banned from playing in a bowl game for two years and banned from playing on television in the 1989 season.

But the Cougars led the nation in total offense (624.9 yards per game) and passing offense (511 yards per game) in 1989, and quarterback Andre Ware won the Heisman Trophy. Houston finished 9-2 and ranked No. 14 in the nation.

Pardee became the coach of the NFL's Houston Oilers in 1990, and led the team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons. Oilers owner Bud Adams traded star quarterback Warren Moon to Minnesota before the 1994 season, and Pardee resigned after a 1-9 start that year.

His name emerged 13 years later for the Houston job, but the school hired Kevin Sumlin instead. Pardee's son, Ted, is currently the color analyst for Houston football radio broadcasts.

Pardee's illness was first reported Tuesday by KTRK-TV of Houston.

(AP) ? The White House and a key congressional Democrat hinted at fresh concessions on taxes and cuts to Medicare and other government benefit programs Wednesday as bargaining with Republicans lurched ahead to avoid the year-end "fiscal cliff" that threatens to send the economy into a tailspin.

Increasing numbers of rank-and-file Republicans also said they were ready to give ground, a boost for House Speaker John Boehner and other party leaders who say they will agree to higher tax revenues as part of a deal if it also curbs benefit programs as a way to rein in federal deficits.

"I'll go anywhere and I'll do whatever it takes to get this done," President Barack Obama said as he sought to build pressure on Republicans to accept his terms ? a swift renewal of expiring tax cuts for all but the highest income earners. "It's too important for Washington to screw this up," he declared.

For all the talk, there was no sign of tangible progress on an issue that marks a first test for divided government since elections that assured Obama a second term in the White House while renewing Republican control in the House.

"It's time for the president and Democrats to get serious about the spending problem that our country has," Boehner said at a news conference in the Capitol. He, like Obama, expressed optimism that a deal could be reached.

At the same time, he publicly disagreed with one GOP lawmaker, Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, who said he was ready to go along with Obama's plan to renew most but not all of the expiring income tax cuts. "It'll hurt the economy" to raise rates for anyone, said Boehner.

Separately, at a closed-door meeting with the rank and file, the speaker told fellow Republicans they are on solid political ground in refusing to let tax rates rise. He circulated polling data showing the public favors closing loopholes to raise revenue far more than it supports raising rates on incomes over $250,000.

There were no face-to-face talks between the administration and lawmakers during the day, although the White House is dispatching Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and top legislative aide Rob Nabors to a series of sessions with congressional leaders on Thursday.

On Wednesday, a group of corporate CEOs pushing for a deal met separately with top Democratic and Republican leaders in the House, joined by Erskine Bowles, who was co-chairman of a deficit commission Obama appointed earlier in his term.

Speaking to reporters before a session with business leaders, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said the bargaining ought to begin where deficit talks between Obama and Boehner broke down 18 months ago "and go from there to reach an agreement."

She didn't say so, but at the time, the two men were exchanging offers that called for at least $250 billion in cuts from Medicare over a decade, and another $100 billion from Medicaid and other federal health programs. Among the changes under discussion ? with Obama's approval ? was a gradual increase in the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 67, as well as higher fees for beneficiaries.

Also on the table at the time was a plan to curtail future cost-of-living increases for Social Security and other benefit programs.

Those negotiations faltered in a hail of recriminations after the president upped his demand for additional tax revenue and conservatives balked. At the same time liberals were objecting to savings from Medicare and Social Security.

Now, more than a year and one election later, Obama has said repeatedly he is open to alternatives to his current proposal to raise additional tax revenue. But he also says he will refuse to sign legislation that extends the current top rates on incomes over $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples.

Instead, he is pushing Congress to renew expiring tax cuts for all income below those levels as an interim measure ? an offer Boehner and Republicans generally say is unacceptable because it would mean higher taxes on small business owners.

Bowles said during the day that Obama might be willing to back off his demand that the top rate revert all the way from 35 percent to 39.6 percent, where it was a decade ago before tax cuts sought by then-President George W. Bush took effect.

At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney sidestepped questions. "If I told you how much flexibility the president had, it would eliminate his flexibility," he said.

He noted that Obama has said he will listen to alternatives, but the spokesman said, "The most basic, simplest, most efficient way to achieve that revenue target is by returning the rates for top earners back to those that were in place in the Clinton era," when the top rate on personal income was the 39.6 percent.

The goal of the talks is to produce a long-term deficit-cutting deal that will allow the cancellation of tax increases and spending cuts scheduled for the end of the year that numerous economists say threaten a new recession.

While the obstacles are numerous, there are other political imperatives pushing the two sides toward an agreement.

Unemployment benefits expire for some of the long-term jobless at the end of the year. Additionally the government is expected to need an increase in borrowing authority early next year or face the possibility of a default. Any agreement on that is expected to raise the current $16.4 trillion level.

What keeps a cell's energy source going?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Most healthy cells rely on a complicated process to produce the fuel ATP. Knowing how ATP is produced by the cell's energy storehouse -- the mitochondria -- is important for understanding a cell's normal state, as well as what happens when things go wrong, for example in cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and many rare disorders of the mitochondria.

Two years ago, Kevin Foskett, PhD, professor of Physiology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues discovered that fundamental control of ATP production is an ongoing shuttle of calcium to the mitochondria from another cell compartment. They found that mitochondria rely on this transfer to make enough ATP to support normal cell metabolism.

Foskett's lab and the lab of colleague Muniswamy Madesh, PhD, at Temple University, discovered last month an essential mechanism that regulates the flow of calcium into mitochondria, described in the October 26 issue of Cell. They found that the mitochondrial protein MICU1 is required to establish the proper level of calcium uptake under normal conditions.

In a new paper out this week in Nature Cell Biology, the same Penn-Temple team describe a new protein and its function. Like MICU1, this new protein, MCUR1, interacts physically with MCU, the uniporter calcium ion channel within the mitochondria. Calcium uptake is driven by a voltage across the inner mitochondrial membrane and mediated by the calcium-selective ion channel called the uniporter.

"But this newly described protein, MCUR1, has the opposite role as MICU1," notes Foskett. "It seems to be a subunit that, together with MCU, is required for a functional uniporter calcium channel."

Many cell plasma membrane ion channels also have subunits that are required for those channels to work. Before this paper, there was no realization that this mitochondrial channel, MCU, did as well.

Maintaining the correct levels of calcium in the mitochondria plays an important role in cellular physiology: Calcium flux across the inner mitochondrial membrane regulates cell energy production and activation of cell-death pathways, for example. In MICU1's absence mitochondria become overloaded with calcium, generating excessive amounts of reactive oxygen molecules and eventually cell death. In contrast, in the absence of MCUR1, mitochondria cannot take up enough calcium. This also has detrimental effects: the cells cannot make enough ATP and they activate autophagy, a mechanism in which cells "eat themselves" to provide sufficient nutrients for survival.

Both papers deal with the function of the uniporter, the calcium channel in the inner membrane of mitochondria that lets calcium get into the mitochondrial matrix where it can do good things like promote ATP synthesis and healthy bioenergetics, or bad things, like mitochondrial-mediated cell death, apoptosis and necrosis.

Because of these two papers, the uniporter is now recognized as a channel complex, containing -- at least -- MCU, MCUR1 and MICU1. Since the uniporter can be a therapeutic target is reperfusion injury, ischemic injury, and programmed cell death, MCUR1 and its interaction with MCU are now targets for drug development.

The Giving Box

The notion that charity begins at home has never been easier to teach children than with this enchanting gift set based on the Jewish tradition of tzadakah, in which children save coins in banks for the less fortunate. Added inspiration for contributing to worthy causes comes from Emmy Award-winning television personality Mister Rogers, whose peaceful ?neighborhood? has been a comforting presence in millions of homes for more than 25 years. In the book that accompanies The Giving Box, Mister Rogers teaches lessons of generosity and charity through heartwarming fictional stories set in countries around the world. For children, he describes how good it feels to give to those less fortunate, and reveals how even one child?s contribution can make a difference. For parents, he offers wise suggestions and practical guidelines on teaching children the moral lesson of compassion for others and the value of charity.

Raising Charitable Children

Getting Past Gimme-Gimme: How to Raise Charitable Children How many times have we heard ourselves, our friends, or our kids? grandparents complain that children have too many things and don?t appreciate any of it? Many of us fear that without some balance, most children will grow up thinking only of themselves. In this book, Weisman shares real-life stories collected from allover the world of how parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, scout leaders, friends, next door neighbors, and her own family have either initiated or supported ways to teach children how to give back to those in need. ?After each of the stories, Weisman offers specific steps to help anyone translate these ideas into action. It offers a set of practical maps or models anyone can use to start making a difference now.

The Giving Book

It is a unique, interactive process that allows parents, teachers or friends to help children understand giving and participate in a stimulating experience. The 64 page, spiral-bound, hardcover book combines colorful illustrations and entertaining narrative with fun learning activities. The book helps them record their ideas, dreams and wishes for the world ?making them the authors of their stories and creating a ?scrapbook? of their journey into compassion, philanthropy and the power of their actions.

AdWords - c. 15000 URLs, c. 105000 keywords - UK Business Forums

Evening,

I've not used AdWords before and having just tried to setup some ads, it seems their structure is not friendly to the format of my ads.

I have about 15,000 pages I want to setup individual ads for; and each ad will have about 7 keywords. Examples:

Ad 1 -
URL: domain.com/page-1
Keywords: gubbinz, fluff, stuff, items, things

Ad 2 -
URL: domain.com/page-2
Keywords: goats, cows, chickens, sheep, llamas

However, it seems to me that AdWords only lets you create multiple ads and assign a pool of keywords to all of them.

I was hoping I could just generate a CSV and upload. But it seems I would have to create 15,000 ad groups with one ad each and several keywords. This is fine, but is there any way I can do that automatically by uploading a CSV?

Obama Marks Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery

ARLINGTON, Va. - Honoring the nation's military "heroes over the generations, who have served this country of ours with distinction," President Barack Obama today participated in Veterans Day ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery.

After laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, the president spoke on the grounds' memorial amphitheater to tell assembled military and their families that Nov. 11 would forever belong to them and, "every service member who has ever worn our nation's uniform."

"On behalf of the American people, I say to you that the memory of your loved one carries on not just in your hearts, but in ours as well. And I assure you that their sacrifice will never be forgotten," he said. "For it is in that sacrifice that we see the enduring spirit of America. Since even before our founding, we have been blessed with an unbroken chain of patriots who have always come forward to serve."

PHOTOS: The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The president recounted remarks he made to commemorate the holiday three years ago, when he spoke of the 9-11 generation of service members. These troops, who had come up in the shadow of the War on Terror, had "toppled a dictator and battled an insurgency in Iraq," he said.

"You pushed back the Taliban and decimated al Qaeda in Afghanistan."

Obama was met with applause when he noted this was the first Veterans Day without an Iraq War.

"Over the next few years, more than a million service members will transition back to civilian life," he said. "They'll take off their uniforms and take on a new and lasting role. They will be veterans. As they come home, it falls to us, their fellow citizens, to be there for them and their families."

Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki - himself a Vietnam vet - introduced the president at the ceremony. Obama praised his department for continuing care for veterans and their families long after wars were over, noting that the US still cares for the child of a Civil War veteran even today, as well as over a hundred spouses and children of men who served in the Spanish-American War.

The president also highlighted the work of first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, who have focused programs on military families during their stay in the White House. The women and Vice President Joe Biden were in attendance.

"That's what we do in America. We take care of our own," he said. "We take care of our veterans. We take care of your families. Not just by saluting you on one day, once a year, but by fighting for you and your families every day of every year."

Read all of ABC News' Veterans Day coverage here.

It was an obligation gladly accepted for veterans like Petty Officer Taylor Morris, who lost all four limbs in Afghanistan to an IED while serving as an explosive ordnance disposal technician. In his closing remarks Obama recounted a viral video of Morris once again dancing with his girlfriend after recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and later awarding him a Purple Heart as he stood in the White House.

You can read ABC News' profile of Petty Officer Morris' path to rehabilitation here.

After his remarks, the president and his wife were joined by the vice president and Dr. Biden as they stopped at the cemetery's "Section 60," an area dedicated to service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Walking among the tombstones, they were quietly greeted by dozens of families that had gathered in the vicinity to reflect and give respects to loved ones.

The Obama administration has reported progress in reforming problems plaguing American service members, including unemployment and homelessness. But the slow-trudging success has at times become a double edged sword.

For example, as reported by the Washington Post the administration has made it easier for veterans to file claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs, but the backlog of pending disability claims has more than doubled since Obama took office in 2009.

ruhansharma79: Coleman Report 1966 ? Nikki Schuster bPortfolio

In 1966 James S. Coleman was hired by the Department of Education to conduct a study about education equality in the US. Coleman (1966) found that teachers had a greater impact on student achievement than either the facility or the curriculum itself. This report was written in the context of a journal article with the findings from the study discussed. One of the most important aspects of Coleman?s (1966) report was the notion that a low achieving student will become a high achieving student if placed in a classroom with other high achieving students. This is significant because it means that if a school has a high population of student who are failing, there is a good chance that if they are pout into a classroom with high achieving students then the probability that they will start succeeding in school is high.

Another interesting fact that was pulled from Coleman?s (1966) report was that concept of the students attitude. What Coleman (1966) calls the ?pupil attitude factor? is a good indicator of a student?s success. This factor can be explained as simply being the extent to which an individual feels he or she has control over his or her future. In other words, if a student feels like they have the ability to be successful and can control their future, then they will be high achieving. When thinking about this concept it is understandable that if someone feels like they have no future or control over their future then they will cease to want to continue to go forward.

I believe that this report has help educational reform because it led to classrooms getting mixed around so that there were high and low achieving students in one classroom. I also think that there was a change in the area where students are told that they are there to better their own future and that they have control over how successful they are.? I believe that these changes were extremely important and have improved the learning environment exponentially since the 1960s.

89% Frankenweenie

All Critics (184) | Top Critics (35) | Fresh (163) | Rotten (21)

Burton's best film since 1994's Ed Wood or even 1990's Edward Scissorhands.

The stop-motion animation - a favorite tool of Burton's - is given loving attention, and the character design is full of terrific touches, such as the hulking flat-topped schoolmate who looks a bit like a certain man-made monster.

The best thing about an animated monster movie with this much heart is: It's alive. In the best possible way.

This 3-D, black-and-white "family" comedy is the year's most inventive, endearing animated feature.

Designed to appeal to both discriminating adults and older kids, the gorgeous, black-and-white stop-motion film is a fresh, clever and affectionate love letter to classic horror movies.

The most Tim Burton-y of the director's films, and not just because it contains a vast catalog of references to his own movies - everything from "Edward Scissorhands'' to the underrated 1989 "Batman.''

Maintains the legitimately dark tone of the original short while expanding the narrative in a pleasingly Scissorhands-esque direction.

In the very best sense, the film is wall-to-wall eye candy.

'Frankenweenie' is far from his best, but it is a timely reassurance that the old Tim Burton still exists and may be able to work his black magic again.

Beautiful, technically astonishing animation and the emotional whack of a lightning bolt cannot quite hide the stitches holding together a paucity of ideas and humour.

The jokes are built almost entirely around references to old black and white horror movies.

Even though it's not among his best films, I'm just happy that Tim Burton has finally made a movie I can recommend to people again.

Frankenweenie is rammed with credible horror references, so this is a great movie for children to see if you want to them to develop a good perspective of film history in years to come.

Visually captivating and smartly written, Frankenweenie brings Tim Burton's career back from the metaphorical dead.

I loved this. It is so beautiful and there's almost an innocence to it that Burton achieves.

It was wise to make the film in black and white, and 3D adds to the charm of this sweetly retro experience. Sparky is hereby added to my list of the cinema's most endearing woofers.

Burton is in lively, playful and sharp form here, deftly balancing blatant eeriness with a chipper cheeriness that excuses many a macabre event.

A loving homage to everything from Frankenstein to Godzilla by way of cosy American suburbia circa the analogue era, Frankenweenie makes superb use of black-and-white and shades of grey, thoughtful lighting and an equally thoughtful musical score.

Despite the gothic elements and macabre adult themes, Frankenweenie is more light than dark and more humorous than droll, with Burton cleverly tempering cold colouring with a warm soundtrack.

This is McDonalds moviemaking - plonk it down, fry it up, slap on a new label, drop fresh tears in the cauldron - and the special sauce rarely tasted so bland.

With its anti-intellectualism critique, classic horror film homages and beautiful production design, Frankenweenie is a great film for adventurous young audiences.

There is, unfortunately, never a point at which it's not completely obvious that Frankenweenie has been adapted from a short film...

Entertaining and with something to say, Frankenweenie is an ideal family film: it treats children with respect and its extraordinary attention to detail in the stop motion animation, painstakingly done, gives adults as much to enjoy

Uncluttered by the simplicity of the format, the attention to detail is extraordinary with concentration on the storytelling and the characters. That is why we are right there... through all the emotional hills and valleys

A funny and touching monster mash-up, with wonderfully strong work from the entire cast...this is essential viewing for animation fans.

An exceptionally appealing family comedy, a stunningly realised stop-motion celebration of cinema, and an audacious criticism of America's anti-intelligentsia plague in one.

Indy neighborhood devastated by explosion, 1 dead

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A deafening explosion that leveled two homes and set two others ablaze forced about 200 people from a devastated Indianapolis neighborhood overnight. Authorities said one body was recovered after the flames were extinguished from the blast that shattered windows, crumpled walls and did other damage to dozens of other homes.

Two people were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, said Lieut. Bonnie Hensley, with the Indianapolis Fire Department. But she cautioned authorities were going through the rubble and conducting a house-by-house search for anyone else in the hours before dawn.

"This looks like a war zone; it really does," Hensley told The Associated Press. "Police officers and fire department officials remain at the scene searching for other possible victims. They've brought in search lights as they look through the ruined homes."

She declined to identify the only confirmed fatality, saying only that the body was found in one of the leveled homes.

The explosion at 11 p.m. Saturday destroyed two houses that were side by side and spread fire to two other nearby homes in the neighborhood on the south side of the city, she said. The blast was heard for miles all around.

She added that at least two dozen other homes on blocks all around were damaged by flying debris from the leveled homes ? as well as from the shock wave from the blast.

Many people were asleep at the time and had to be evacuated in pajamas, scooping up their pets as they left hastily, authorities said. They left what some described as a chaotic scene of tall flames rising on the Indianapolis skyline.

Survivors reported shattered windows, caved-in walls and garage doors knocked off their hinges. And of the two homes that were leveled by the blast, Hensley said: "There's nothing left."

Complicating the pre-dawn search of the neighborhood, authorities did not know definitively how many people were in the neighborhood when the blast occurred. "People scattered when all this happened, so we're not really sure how many people we're looking for," Hensley said.

Bryan and Trina McClellan were at home with their 23-year-old son Eric when the shock wave from the blast a block away shuddered through their home. It knocked the windows out along one side of their home and their first instinct was to check on their two toddler grandchildren in the basement. One was holding his ears and saying "Loud noise, loud noise."

Eric McClellan said he ran afterward to the scene of the explosion and saw homes leveled or nearly so.

"Somebody was trapped inside one of the houses and the firefighters were trying to get to him. I don't know if he survived," he said, adding firefighters were trying to save a man.

He said he didn't know the man's fate as firefighters ordered him to leave.

The cause of the explosions remains unknown, authorities said. Investigators were expected to better assess the rubble after daybreak for clues to what happened. Meanwhile, all power, gas and other utilities were shut off as a precaution as emergency officials swarmed the site.

Approximately 200 people were taken to an elementary school where only about 15 to 25 remained through the night, sleeping on cots. Most of the evacuees subsequently left to stay with relatives, friends or at hotels.

The powerful blast caught sleeping people unaware.

Pam Brainerd, a 59-year-old hospice nurse, said she was asleep on her couch when the tremendous explosion rocked the neighborhood, blowing out the upstairs windows in her house.

"I was sleeping on the sofa and all of a sudden, my upstairs windows were blowing out and my front door was falling in," Brainerd told AP. "My front door came off the frame. It was the largest bang I've ever heard."

Right after the explosion she stepped outside to see what she described tall flames one street away. "There was a house engulfed in flames and I could see it spreading to other houses," she added.

At the elementary school, authorities sought to impose order and calm on an initial scene of confusion.

Some evacuees milled about the elementary school in pajamas and coats they grabbed as they left their homes. Some had their dogs on leashes and one lady had evacuated her home with a cat. Beyond the school's parking lot, smoke was still visible, rising in the distance before dawn. The smoke was illuminated by bright lights of emergency responders.

The cause of the explosion and fires wasn't immediately clear, but Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard immediately squelched initial speculation of a possible plane crash. "It was so strong that it clearly had an effect for blocks," Ballard said while grey clouds of smoke still billowed after the fires were contained.

While some questioned whether natural gas was suspected in the blast, he said he had no preliminary information on a possible cause. He said it was still a time for taking care of those forced out.

"We're going to need some comforting in the next few days," Ballard added.

Slovenians choose president amid talk of bailout

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) ? Slovenians voted for a president Sunday, hoping whoever wins will boost the prospects of the small, economically struggling country, which may become the next European nation needing an international bailout.

Three candidates are competing ? incumbent President Danilo Turk, former Prime Minister Borut Pahor and ruling center-right coalition candidate, Milan Zver. But none is expected to win the majority needed for an outright victory, so a second round of balloting will likely take place Dec. 2.

The presidency is a largely ceremonial post, but still commands political authority in this nation of 2 million. Chosen for a five-year term, the president heads the army and proposes the national bank chief. The latter is an especially sensitive task considering the severe financial crisis caused here by state-owned banks' rampant lending.

The race for president also could affect political stability in Slovenia, where the government of Prime Minister Janez Jansa faces strong opposition to the reform package it believes will help save the economy, such as pension and labor reforms.

Jansa's government also has pushed for the recapitalization of banks and the creation of a so-called wealth fund to manage state property, but the opposition is demanding a referendum be held on those measures.

Surveys suggest Turk is leading, followed by Pahor and Zver. Both Turk and Pahor have criticized Jansa's government. All three candidates promised to do their best to boost optimism in this European Union nation.

"Slovenia is a country for all ... our mutual obligation and our mutual responsibility," the 60-year-old Turk said. "Today we must show national responsibility, national unity and nationwide participation in this election."

Slovenia has been hit hard by the global economic downturn and the debt crisis in the eurozone. Once a prosperous EU newcomer, the former Yugoslav republic has been tipped as the next country that could seek outsiders' financial help, joining a list that includes Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Cyprus.

But many voters hope things can improve.

"I think it will be better," said Miro Pogavc, a 75-year-old retiree, as he cast ballot in the capital of Ljubljana. "Less fighting among us, and a better life. That's my opinion."

Pahor, 49, said his aim is to restore confidence among politicians and people in Slovenia. "My plan is to create an atmosphere of optimism," said Pahor, whose own government was ousted last year largely over the economic downturn.

The ruling coalition candidate, 50-year-old Zver, predicted "the result will be tight" but said he expects to make the runoff.

About 14 percent of voters cast ballots in the first four hours of voting. Some 1.6 million people are eligible to vote. The first unofficial results are expected shortly after polls close Sunday evening.

27 inmates killed in Sri Lanka prison shootout

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) ? A shootout between rioting prisoners and security forces at a prison in Sri Lanka's capital killed at least 27 inmates, while police said Saturday that they arrested five prisoners who had managed to escape and were searching for others.

Another 42 people were wounded in the shootout Friday between inmates and army and police commandos that broke out after the rioting prisoners briefly took control of at least part of the Welikada prison in Colombo. The situation at the prison had returned to normalcy by Saturday morning.

"The prison is now totally under our control," said prison chief P.W. Kodippili, whose facility was the site of another riot earlier this year.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe, director of the Colombo National Hospital, said the bodies of 16 inmates were at his hospital.

Kodippili said that security forces had found the bodies of 11 other inmates inside the prison premises, and that the total number of deaths stood at 27.

Twenty-three inmates who were injured in the clash were receiving treatment at the hospital, Jasinghe said. Thirteen police officers, four soldiers, a prison guard and a passer-by also were being treated there for injuries.

Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said five prisoners who escaped from the prison had been arrested.

Kodippili declined to say how many inmates may have escaped, but said search operations were under way to find others who may have fled.

Jayakody said the fighting began when police commandos went to the prison to conduct a search and were attacked by inmates hurling stones. He declined to provide more information. Officials often conduct raids for narcotics and communication devices.

An Associated Press photographer saw prisoners waving rifles atop the prison's roof Friday night.

Other prisoners piled into a three-wheeled vehicle and began driving toward a main city road before security forces outside the prison opened fire. The vehicle stopped, and three unmoving bodies could be seen.

Dozens of security officers then entered the prison, and volleys of gunfire rang out. Prisoners could be heard screaming, "Stop shooting!"

Army troops were called in later to help control the situation.

Kodippili said the inmates had broken into the prison's two armories during the riot and taken weapons stored there. The inmates opened fire at police commandos, who shot back.

He said that security forces had so far recovered 76 weapons taken by the prisoners and that six more weapons were still missing.

A clash between inmates and guards at the same prison last January wounded 28 people. Those prisoners were protesting the authorities' move to curtail drug smuggling into the facility.
