Romo overcomes pain as Cowboys top Redskins 18-16 (AP)

ARLINGTON, Texas ? Tony Romo had no choice. He had to play, broken rib and all.

His new bride wouldn't have tolerated anything less.

"She said, `Are you kidding? You're playing. I can't have a weak husband lying around the house here,'" Romo said ? smiling and wincing after leading the Dallas Cowboys to an 18-16 victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday night.

Romo had a mostly forgettable night except for the fact Dallas won.

He was hurting so much he needed two pain-killing injections. His center had a tendency to snap the ball too soon or to the wrong spot. And he couldn't get into the end zone no matter what, not even with a first down on the 2-yard line.

Yet he set up Dan Bailey for six field goal tries, and the rookie made them all, including a go-ahead 40-yarder with 1:52 left.

When linebacker Anthony Spencer forced a fumble that teammate Sean Lee recovered with 28 seconds left, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett dropped to a knee and pumped his fist wildly. He had good reason to celebrate: Dallas was about to be 2-1, guaranteeing no repeat of last year's miserable 1-7 start.

The Cowboys are even tied for first place in the NFC East, along with Washington (2-1), which was seeking its first 3-0 start since 2005.

"We're better than last year ? already," Dallas linebacker Bradie James said.

This was the second straight game that a Romo-Bailey tandem pulled out a victory. Against San Francisco a week ago Sunday, Bailey made a tying field goal at the end of regulation, then the winner in overtime.

Bailey's other kicks Monday night covered 41 (twice), 32, 27 and 23 yards.

"We had good snaps, good holds, great protection. I had the easy job," said Bailey, an undrafted rookie who was named the nation's top kicker in college last season at Oklahoma State. "Whenever you can string a couple of kicks together, it's a confidence booster."

Romo was hardly hit in the first half, then the Redskins got in several crushing blows starting just after halftime. That's also when the snaps became an issue. He couldn't hide his frustration with new center Phil Costa, and clearly wasn't happy with receiver Kevin Ogletree after an incompletion at the end of the drive that reached the 2. That failure forced Dallas to settle for its fifth field goal and a 16-15 deficit instead of a go-ahead touchdown.

Rob Ryan's re-energized Dallas defense got the ball back quickly, and Romo took advantage. Another bad snap left the Cowboys with a third-and-21, and Romo followed with a rollout to his right and a deep pass to Dez Bryant for a 30-yard gain. Another 15 yards were tacked on because of a facemask penalty on the beaten defender ? cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who last week said he was hoping "to put my helmet on whatever's hurt" on Romo and all other wounded Cowboys.

Hall had plenty more to say after the game. In an expletive-filled interview, he questioned the eight-man front on Bryant's catch and the official's decision to flag him.

"I told the ref after that call, that might have been his worst call of the game," Hall said. "He's going to get demerit points for that call. Because that wasn't no facemask."

Romo was 22 of 36 for 255 yards. His best stat was simply lasting all four quarters.

"I want to play," Romo said. "We only get to go out and do this 16 times, 16 days out of 365 days a year. You want to be out there. You put so much effort, when you go, you go."

Romo wasn't the only Dallas player who gutted it out.

Bryant missed the previous game because of a thigh injury, yet had four catches for 63 yards. Felix Jones, who separated a shoulder against the 49ers, ran for a career-high 115 yards and caught three passes for 40 more. Jason Witten fought through a rib injury to catch six passes for 60 yards.

"It wasn't a perfect performance by any means, but enough to win the game," Garrett said.

The Dallas defense limited the Redskins to field goals on two of their first three drives, the latter reaching the Dallas 9.

Rex Grossman really only had one solid drive, a 76-yarder capped by a 1-yard touchdown pass to Tim Hightower that put Washington up 16-9. The Redskins never even crossed midfield after that, punting on three straight drives then losing the fumble.

"It feels like the waste of a week," tight end Chris Cooley said. "We're capable of winning a division game on the road. I'm disappointed with the way we finished."

Grossman was 22 of 37 for 250 yards. He was sacked three times ? once by DeMarcus Ware, his NFL-leading fifth ? and threw an interception.

Explaining his game-deciding fumble, Grossman said, "I was trying to make a play. I felt like I could get the ball to Santana (Moss). I obviously couldn't."

Most of the Redskins' points came from Graham Gano, who made field goals of 50, 46 and 27 yards. Another was blocked after a poor hold.

"We're going to find out what type of football team we have," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. "When you lose like that it hurts. We don't have time to feel sorry for yourself."

Nuclear engineer assassinated in central Syria - World news

September 28, 2011 ? BEIRUT (AP) ? A Syrian nuclear engineer was assassinated in a hail of bullets in central Syria Wednesday, the latest casualty in a string of murders this week of academics and scientists, Syria's state-run news agency and activists said.

SANA said engineer and university professor Aws Khalil was shot in the head by an "armed terrorist group" operating in Homs, but activists accused the regime of going after academics in an attempt to terrorize the city's rebellious population.

His killing came as fighting raged in the nearby town of Rastan for the second day between troops trying to enter the town and army deserters who have switched sides and joined the mass revolt against President Bashar Assad that began in mid-March.

Activists say there are hundreds of soldiers who have defected in Rastan and other areas on the outskirts of Homs. The Local Coordination Committees activist group and London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a defected lieutenant died in Wednesday's clashes.

Khalil is the fourth Syrian academic to be assassinated in Homs since Sunday. The city, a hotbed of dissent against Assad's autocratic regime, has witnessed some of the largest anti-government protests since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad began six months ago.

In the past month, it has witnessed almost daily clashes between Syrian troops and army defectors. There also have been increasing reports of attacks on security forces and police patrols by some who have taken up arms to fight the military crackdown.

Mohammed Saleh, an opposition figure in Homs, said Khalil's assassination Wednesday is part of a string of killings ? all in the same manner ? of Syrian academics. They include Hassan Eid, chief of chest surgery at the Homs hospital who had treated wounded Syrian protesters in the past months.

Also shot dead were professors Nael Dakhil, 54, and Mohammed Aqeel, 49, who was assassinated by bullets that struck his car in the Ghouta neighborhood of Homs. The dead men came from different religious backgrounds ? Shiite, Alawite and Christian ? and it unclear whether the killings had any sectarian motives. None of those killed were Sunni, Saleh said.

The killings are reminiscent of assassinations in Iraq following the 2003 U.S. invasion of that toppled Saddam Hussein's regime, when the country was hit by a wave of assassinations that claimed the lives of scores of physicians, professors and nuclear experts in what led to a brain drain from the country.

Syria, like Iraq, has a volatile sectarian divide, making civil unrest a frightening prospect. The Assad regime is dominated by the Alawite minority, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, but the country is overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim.

Saleh said it was not clear who was behind the killings, adding there were gunmen operating in Homs and that the situation was fluid. Syria-based activist Mustafa Osso blamed the regime was for the assassinations. "They are trying to sow chaos, fear and terror in the hope that protesters will be cowed into retreat," he said.

A statement by the Al Ghad coalition, an umbrella group of Syrian activists, said it was yet another attempt to crush the Syrian people's peaceful revolution. "The regime has failed until now to create sectarian strife in Homs and it's trying again now to do so in a brutal way, disregarding the importance of scientific experts to Syrian society," a statement said.

SANA, the state-run news agency, said Khalil, like the other three academics, was killed by armed terrorist groups which it blames for the unrest in Syria. The New York-based Human Rights Watch group, meanwhile, called for an international investigation into the possible role by Syrian security agents in the recent decapitation of an 18-year-old Syrian woman.

Zainab al-Hosni from Homs was beheaded and mutilated early this month, and her body returned to her family. She is believed to be the first woman to die in Syrian custody since the uprising started. Activists said she had been detained by security agents to pressure her activist brother to turn himself in.

"Syrian security forces either killed and mutilated Zainab al-Hosni or are turning a blind eye to gangs committing gruesome murders against anti-government activists and their families," said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.

British sitcom writer David Croft dies at 89 (AP)

LONDON ? Television writer David Croft, who helped create much-loved British sitcoms such as "Dad's Army" and "Are You Being Served?," died Tuesday. He was 89.

Croft's agent Tim Hancock, said the writer died at his holiday home in Portugal. Croft's family said in a statement that he "died peacefully in his sleep," but did not give a cause.

The son of actors, Croft served with the Royal Artillery during World War II before starting a showbiz career, eventually moving into TV as a producer, director and writer.

Several of his comedies had military settings, including "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" ? set in wartime India and Burma ? and "Dad's Army," about a hapless World War II Home Guard unit.

Co-created with Jimmy Perry, "Dad's Army" is considered a comedy classic, and is still frequently rerun more than 40 years after its debut.

Croft and Perry had another long-running hit with "Hi-de-Hi!" set in a 1950s holiday camp.

With Jeremy Lloyd, Croft wrote several series in the 1970s and 80s, including "'Allo 'Allo!" ? set in the unlikely comic environment of Nazi-occupied France ? and the perennially popular department-store sitcom "Are You Being Served?"

The shows drew viewers in the millions with their mix of memorable characters, nostalgic settings, catch phrases and double entendres.

In a statement, Croft's family said he would have "been proud that you had all been watching."

Former BBC head of comedy Jon Plowman said Croft was "quite simply a genius who invented a whole genre of comedy that was all his own ? mostly from his own experience."

"He wrote so much of the great comedy from the last 30 or 40 years, always impeccably cast with an ensemble of great character actors," Plowman said.

In 1978, Croft was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II, for services to television.

He is survived by his wife and children. Funeral details were not immediately available.

Poland's jobless rate down to 11.6 pct in August (AP)

WARSAW, Poland ? Government statistics show that Poland's jobless rate inched down to 11.6 percent in August from 11.7 the previous month.

The Central Statistical Office said Friday that 1.85 million people in the country of 38 million were registered as jobless at the end of August. It was almost 8,000 fewer unemployed compared to July but more than 55,000 fewer than in August 2010.

The drop in the jobless rate was due to seasonal jobs in agriculture, construction, tourism and forestry, as well as from buoyant economic growth. Poland's economy is growing at about 4 percent this year, though it is expected to slow to about 3 percent growth next year due to the economic turmoil in Europe.

Poland has faced high unemployment since the ex-communist country adopted a market economy in 1990.

Cancer protein's surprising role as memory regulator

Thursday, September 22, 2011

Scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School have found that a common cancer protein leads a second, totally different life in normal adult brain cells: It helps regulates memory formation and may be implicated in Alzheimer's disease.

Cyclin E is a well-known culprit that drives many types of solid tumors and blood cancers. The report, published online in Developmental Cell, is the first revelation that cyclin E has a crucial role in the formation of nerve connections, or synapses, in the brain. Synapses are tiny connections between brain cells where memories are stored.

"This protein has a double life," said Peter Sicinski, PhD, a cancer biologist at Dana-Farber and senior author of the publication. "It is overexpressed in many different cancers, but it also is expressed in high levels in the human brain. We have found that cyclin E is needed for memory formation and is a very important player."

The researchers found potential evidence linking cyclin E to Alzheimer's disease, because it binds to an enzyme called Cdk5 that is involved in memory.

"There is good evidence that hyperactivity of Cdk5 contributes to Alzheimer's disease and inhibiting this enzyme can ameliorate symptoms in animals," said Sicinski, who is also a professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. "Manipulating cyclin E levels might be another way to accomplish this."

The scientists didn't test cyclin E in Alzheimer's mice, but they did show that when cyclin E binds to Cdk5 molecules, it locks them away in an unusable form. Moreover, when the researchers reduced cyclin E levels in mouse brain cells, fewer nerve connections formed and the animals' memories suffered.

Cyclins are a family of related proteins found in dividing cells. They serve as biological switches, controlling a cell's progression from one phase of its life cycle to the next. The actual signals to exit one phase and enter the next are issued by enzymes called cyclin-dependent kinases, or Cdks, that bind to cyclins.

Many types of cancer cells, including breast, ovarian, colon, and blood cancers, are driven by the overexpression of cyclin E, which acts like a car's accelerator pressed to the floor, speeding the cells through their growth-and-division cycle and allowing tumors to form and spread.

Though cyclin E is mainly found in dividing cells, researchers discover about a decade ago that cyclin E is also plentiful in adult, differentiated brain cells. But what it was doing there, no one knew.

In the current Developmental Cell paper, Junko Odajima, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Sicinski laboratory and the paper's co-lead author (with Zachary P. Wills, PhD, from Harvard Medical School), showed that cyclin E in the brain attaches itself to the Cdk5 enzyme. When cyclin E molecules bind to and inactive Cdk5, synapses formation is increased, and, presumably, memory function improves.

Odajima tested this idea using a standard memory and learning test in which mice swimming in water must find a submerged platform to rest on, and remember its location in subsequent trials. The researchers then move the platform, requiring the animals to "forget" its previous location and learn and remember the new one.

As their hypothesis had suggested, mice deficient in cyclin E performed worse than rodents who had a normal amount of cyclin E. This contrast highlighted the importance of cyclin E for learning and memory.

Whether cyclin E levels rise and fall in the mouse brain during learning tasks is a topic of further research, said the scientists, who also plan to determine whether abnormal cyclin E levels can be linked to neurological diseases and learning disorders.

9. Cleaning product sold in cartridges, diluted at home from the tap

Forward-thinking manufacturers are working to decrease the amount of packaging used for their products. Some offer concentrated formulas, others sell refills in bags instead of containers. Now, a Canadian startup has come up with an innovative solution: refill cartridges that consumers dilute at home. Developed by Planet People, the iQ line of household cleaning products features small cartridges of plant-based concentrate. Consumers fill a spray bottle with ordinary tap water and pop in a cartridge. The coloured concentrate visibly mixes with the water, and voila: a full bottle of cleaner.

GM to share electric car tech with Chinese

Under pressure from the Beijing government General Motors has agreed to provide access to its proprietary electric vehicle technology to its lead Chinese partner.

The move is raising numerous concerns, critics contending that China is, for one thing, using unfair pressure to gain access to technologies that will later be used by its own domestic manufacturers to compete with foreign brands like GM.

But the U.S. automotive giant contends the move will help it maintain a lead in the rapid electrification of the industry ? especially since China, now the world?s largest automotive market, is making a rapid push into battery power to curb its dependence on foreign oil and reduce its endemic pollution problems.

?We can accomplish far more by working together than we can by working separately,? said Tim Lee, president of GM International Operations, during a signing ceremony with the maker?s lead Chinese partner, the government-owned Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corp., or SAIC.

The move followed a first-time meeting of the General Motors Board of Directors in China. The huge and fast-growing market last year generated more vehicle sales, on a unit basis, than the U.S., and GM is expecting to more than double volume to 5 million by 2015. In April, the automaker announced plans to invest between $5 billion and $7 billion to achieve that target.

The huge expansion of the Chinese auto market has created problems, leading to a significant increase in oil imports and worsening the Asian nation?s already serious urban pollution problem. That has led Beijing to press for a rapid shift to battery-powered vehicles. GM is planning to launch the new Chevrolet Volt in China later this year and will also market a European version of the plug-in hybrid, the Opel Ampera.

GM officials contend the new alliance with SAIC will help them ?to lead the auto industry in new energy vehicle technology,? said Lee, who described the shift to battery propulsion as a ?very aggressive and challenging project.?

But critics note that GM has also faced significant pressure from China to accept the partnership, government regulators threatening to withhold sales incentives for the Volt were GM to have rejected the technology sharing agreement.

Such a move might violate international trade agreements, critics argued. But the more serious concern is that GM may now lose control of key intellectual property. Protection of IP rights has become a critical concern with Chinese businesses routinely ignoring trademarks and copyrights on everything from pop music and movies to pharmaceuticals and automotive design.

GM and SAIC are already involved in 10 separate partnerships, including the operation of the U.S. maker?s first Chinese plant, in Shanghai. They recently launched the new Baojuan brand to help expand sales in China?s second-tier cities.

GM sales in China rose 30% last year and have increased another 5.4% through August, even though overall demand in the market has been slipping in recent months.

To underscore the importance of the Chinese market, GM CEO Dan Akerson met with 700 employees at the PATEC technical center the maker operates with SAIC in Shanghai. That facility will be taking a significant role in the development of battery vehicles specifically for China. But critics warn that SAIC could also use its new knowledge to develop vehicles it plans to sell in direct competition to GM.

Under the strange bedfellow rules of the Chinese auto industry, SAIC not only partners with GM but also its German arch-rival Volkswagen AG. Longer-term, critics warn that SAIC intends to become a serious automotive contender on its own.

As trademark registration is a legal process, there are several legal terms, either formal or informal, with which the applicant should be familiar.

1.??? Badge of origin: the function of a trademark. It indicates the identity of a
person or business as the source of goods or services.

2.??? Bare License: Occasionally a trademark owner allows another person or
Organization, through a license, to use the trademark, but fails to maintain effective supervision and quality control of the licensee?s products or services. The original owner may or may not suffer some decrease in legal rights regarding the trademark, depending on circumstances. This situation is termed ?naked licensing? in the United States.

3.??? Distinctiveness: also termed ?Acquired Distinctiveness.? This status is attained
through the use of the mark, normally for a considerable period of time. Evidence of use, such as sales receipts, sales figures and reports, and advertising or marketing budgets, are useful evidence.

4. ??? Exclusions: Many countries do not permit certain symbols or terms to undergo the Trademark Registration process. National flags, the insignia of royal families and the Olympic Games rings are all excluded.

5.??? Infringement: the unauthorized use of a trademark. Note that to prevent infringement, the trademark must be registered, or the trademark must have been used for a long enough time so that it has acquired distinctiveness.

6.??? Passing Off: Regarding an unregistered trademark, this is a situation in which
one person?s or business?s goods or services are manufactured or presented resulting in confusion with another person?s or business?s goods or services. Typically, one unregistered trademark is very similar to another registered or unregistered trademark. To successfully benefit from passing off, a person must be able to prove that the trademark belongs to them. More, they must have established some sort of reputation through use of the mark. Finally, the individual must be able to show he or she has somehow been harmed by another?s use of the mark. Proving a passing off action can be difficult and expensive. Registering the trademark is an easy way to protect against another?s unauthorized use of your trademark.

7.??? Prior Rights: certain legal rights acquired through use of an unregistered trademark for a long enough time that it has attained local uniqueness.

8.??? Trademark: a specific sign used by an individual or business to distinguish the products or services provided by that individual or business from those of other people or organizations. A trademark may be traditional, such as a word, phrase, logo, symbol, design, some sort of image or a combination of these. There are also non-traditional trademarks, such as colours, sounds, and even smells. Trademarks are considered as property.

9.??? Trademark Classes: classification of goods and services into specific classes.
Numbers 1 to 34 include goods/products, while Numbers 35 to 45 include services. This classification arose out of the International (Nice) Classification of goods and services. The purpose was twofold: to decide exactly which goods and services are able to be registered under trademarks and two, to attempt to unify various national classification systems.

For clarification of any of these terms, or guidance in the process of Trademark Registration, interested parties should contact the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO).

Hugo Chavez Criticizes Inter-American Court Of Human Rights Over Leopoldo Lopez Ruling

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez criticized the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on Saturday after it ruled in favor of an opposition politician who is seeking to run for president.

The Costa Rica-based court said in its ruling released Friday that Leopoldo Lopez should be allowed to run for office despite a decision by Venezuela's top anti-corruption official that had barred him from being a candidate due to a corruption investigation.

Chavez said the court is part of an international system that "protects the corrupt and obeys the mandate of the (U.S.) imperial power and the bourgeoisie."

"What value can that court have?" Chavez said. "For me, it's worthless."

Chavez didn't respond specifically to the court's conclusions in its decision. "It's not up to me to comment on the legal details of that issue," he said, adding that other Venezuelan institutions would respond to the ruling.

He said the court's decision reflected "the desperation of the bourgeoisie seeking to make itself a victim, searching for a candidate whoever it is." Chavez has drawn key support from the poor since he was first elected in 1998, and has sought to portray his opponents as representing the interests of the wealthy.

A Lopez candidacy could lead to a significant shift in the field of opposition candidates as contenders begin campaigning for a primary vote in February designed to pick a unity candidate to challenge Chavez. The presidential election will be held in October 2012.

Lopez, a former Caracas district mayor, was barred from running for office in 2005 by the country's comptroller general. Lopez was accused of receiving donations on behalf of an organization he led between 1998 and 2001 from the state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA, where his mother worked at the time.

Lopez was among a list of politicians blacklisted due to corruption investigations, but he has not been formally charged with any crime and he maintains he is innocent. He challenged his disqualification before the human rights court, arguing his rights were violated.

The court agreed, saying Venezuela's National Electoral Council "should assure that the sanctions ... don't constitute an impediment to the candidacy of Mr. Lopez."

The government said in a statement Friday that it would await decisions on the matter by Venezuela's Supreme Court.

Chavez mentioned the decision by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights during a televised meeting with Bolivian President Evo Morales. The two leaders later left for Cuba, where Chavez will be undergoing cancer treatment.

Chavez said Venezuela has institutions that "know how to occupy their position and defend the constitutional mandate."

Lopez confirmed Friday that he intends to run for president and said Venezuela has an obligation to comply with the court's ruling.

Venezuela is a signatory to the American Convention on Human Rights, which the regional court cited in its ruling.

General Aviation ? Over regulation, lawsuits, liability and drag down ...

It seems we are moving away from being a nation for the people and by the people to a nation that is for the lawyers and by the lawyers, leaving the rest of us to fund their endeavors. Why, I ask? Today?s example in this epic long series of articles focuses on General Aviation and how FAA regulation, litigation, and aircraft insurance is dragging the general aviation insurance industry into the ditch. Let?s start by reminding you that these are philosophical Considerations in this series of articles, many-many areas of the American way of life.

So, that's another philosophical thinking about the lawyers and responsibilities. Not long ago I spoke with a person who is a pilot with 100 hours and was a member of a university division sides. There was also a member of another club on campus and wanted to fly an airplane around the group of hundreds of miles away to transport to an event. It is able to do so because the sponsors of the OAS Flying Club was concerned about insurance and so on.

Liability costs are those that prevent all of this, lawyers, lawsuits, and insurance regulations, the downside to the advantage of the opportunity for free people to do things you want to do it. How to fly a goal at a reasonable price. This is the same thing is happening in health care and why tort reform is necessary. Therefore, the hiring of an aircraft cost so much, because fewer and fewer young people are inFBO> Aviation, and because it is difficult to make.

And "because half the people in Wichita are unemployed, and why we can not this industry from the ground VLJ. I'm sure to influence the privatization of space. So I have a problem with lawyers have, and maybe one day Health care could be denied health insurance was denied, denied the ability to fly, has denied licenses, because all they do, the ruin everything for everyone else, and if they want to destroy all this, we mustshould include those to pay the price, not the company. See the point?

And maybe that's why the leases, insurance policies, aviation, Fars, and how there are so many pages. We have attorneys on both sides, when what we really need is not, and you can enforce personal responsibility, due diligence and prudent. Thanks again for your attention. Ok, what's your thoughts on this?
