Fire damage is but one type of damage that everyone can live without. Within seconds, it can eat everything that you have ever worked hard for. Although ferocious, fire can actually be prevented with proper discipline and mind set. Here?s how you can do it.
1. Make sure that appliances are unplugged when not in use. This would include your phone chargers, flat irons, and TV sets. Leaving it plugged can cause the wires to overheat which can, in turn, lead to fire.
2. Do not use octopus connections. Aside from appearing untidy, octopus connection is in the top of the list for causes of fire since they promote overloading.
3. Use your fuse correctly. Do not replace them with other materials as these could result to short circuits.
4. Do not plug an appliance with a 110 voltage on a 220.
5. Make sure that your plug fits snugly in the outlet. Loose-fitting plugs can overheat and cause fire within minutes.
6. Never place your TV sets near the window especially if you have curtains. Should these overheat or have problems in wiring, your curtains could catch fire easily. Your TV can also be damaged by rain coming in which can also lead to short circuits or minor sparks. These minor sparks can lead to big fires.
7. Glasses or vases filled with water should not be placed on top of your TV set. Should someone accidentally knock them over, it could also result to a short circuit and fire.
8. Inspect your computer and other electric equipment regularly to prevent fire damage from happening. Check for cracks, open wires and broken connectors. Bring them to a professional if ever they have sustained some damage.
9. Be extra vigilant during the Christmas season. One can easily suffer from fire damage with all the Christmas lights around the house. Inspect first your Christmas lights before installing them. If you see frayed wires, do not attempt to repair it on your own. Keep them away from your pets as dogs can chew these wires causing short circuits.
10. Lighted candles unattended should not be left unattended. If they should accidentally fall, they could cause fire damage in minutes.
11. Make sure that you only use the specified wattage for your home?s lighting fixtures. Keep in mind also that bulbs should be screwed securely to their sockets.
12. Do not place any electrical gadgets near your sink, tub or any water source. Items like hair dryer should be unplugged after use.
13. Keep your oven as well as your stove-top clean. Any accumulated grease can be reason for fire to spread.
14. Put flammable items away from the burner. What may start as a singed thread from your kitchen towel may end up as a major fire damage to your home.
15. When cooking, make sure that you turn the pot handle inwards to avoid anyone hitting it when they walk pass the stove.
16. Make it a habit to conduct an inspection once a month. This would save you from headaches due to fire damage.
With the right discipline and consistency, fire damage would be the least of your worries knowing that your home is safe.
